Cruise beweist, dass er ein cooler Agent nicht nur in eye-candy Attraktionen mit einem hohen Budget und komplizierten Stuntman-Einsätzen sein kann, sondern auch in einem durchdachten und originellen Krimi-Thriller, der keine Angst hat, sich nicht so sehr ernst zu nehmen. (29.03.2013)

This was great! It’s a fantastic genre film, which sprinkles one cliché after another in such a cadence that I snorted with joy for two hours. The film works in every conceivable way, from the (un)predictable story, the fitting music, and the hero’s catchphrases, to a few scenes that want to be quoted time after time (the opening, the bathroom, the chase, and even the rainy ending). This isn’t going to be the only movie theater screening. (02.01.2013)

I have to admit that even though I like Tom Cruise and action movies, I didn’t find Jack Reacher interesting at all when it launched in cinemas. I don’t even know why. In the end, I decided to watch it and I have to say that when it comes to action scenes, I haven’t seen a better movie. The main problem is the story. It starts our pretty interesting, but I somehow couldn’t get in sync with the intimate mood that follows the opening scene. Also, Tom isn’t a character I would grow very fond of at first sight. Well and there’s nobody else in the movie who could accomplish that. About halfway through the movie, I was getting pretty bored. But that was only until the scene with the Chevrolet Camaro. If nothing else, this scene was overflowing with energy in a way that I haven’t seen in any action scene in a long time. Too bad Jack Reacher isn’t the type I would love to go out and grab a beer with. He might convince me with his next movie. (13.01.2014)

Cruise als Adoptivsohn von Steven Seagal und James Bond? Aber nein, eher der ermüdete Typ von nebenan, der zu viel gesehen und erlebt hat, und rein zufällig bestand hier das meiste aus genialen Deduktionen und Fights mit uniformierten Genossen. McQuarrie hat eine Vorliebe für traditionelle Genres, in The Way of the Gun bediente er sich der Westernfilme, wobei er hier einen altmodischen langsamen Thriller mit langsam dosierten Informationen und anachronistisch langsamen Tracking-Shots sowie beunruhigenden Hinweisen verehrt. Das ganze ist gar nicht schlecht, zumindest wenn man diese vage Partie zwischen Camp und tödlichem Ernst akzeptiert. Die Exposition (die jeder verflucht) habe ich sehr genossen, und im Gegenteil, ich war bei denjenigen Szenen schlapp, in denen Cruise a) moralisiert (hat er wirklich das Gefühl, dass ihm jemand den Anti-System-Rebellen abnehmen wird?) b) in den Reden anderer Charaktere nahezu wie ein mythischer Superheld erscheint, obwohl es dafür keinen Grund gibt. Als Detektivstory ist es jedoch passabel (es werden ja nicht so sehr viele gedreht, so dass man es zu schätzen weiß, wenn hier eine deduktive Wendung gelingt), als Thriller hat der Streifen eine Art bärtig-schnurrbärtig-gekünstelten Charme, für einen Camp gibt es hier viele Attraktionen (Herzog und Duvall sind perfekt, die Badezimmerschlacht hat womöglich Kultcharakter). Das ganze als Thriller-Start der Reacher-Serie? Nun ja, ich habe überhaupt nicht verstanden, was denn eigentlich McQuarrie im Vergleich zur Konkurrenz anbieten möchte, abgesehen von der verwirrten Flüchtigkeit zwischen Humor und Ernsthaftigkeit, erfolgreichen selbstverlachenden Witzen sowie einer Welt, in der eine Weile der Ultra-Realismus, ein andermal jedoch die Saite angespielt wird, die zum Beispiel das ursprüngliche A-Team hat anklingen lassen. Wenn sich doch der Streifen einer heroischen bombastischen Herangehensweise entledigen würde und mit den Füßen auf dem Boden geblieben wäre, hätte es ein würdiger, nachdenklicher Krimi werden können. Doch dann wäre es nicht mehr in ausreichendem Maße ein Jack Reacher, oder? Vier Sterne, weil ich mich die meiste Zeit über diese zwei Stunden hinweg sehr amüsiert habe, manchmal vielleicht auch gegen die würdigen Absichten der Filmemacher und gegen die beharrlichen Bemühungen des kleinen Tom, der als Fünfzigjähriger so hart wie Granit und so verführerisch wie Amor zu sein will. P.S. Jemand sollte Chris einmal erklären, dass Blondinen mit großen Augen zwar nett sind, jedoch ihr grundloser Blick in die Kamera mutet überhaupt nicht tiefgründig an. (19.12.2012)

I can’t remember seeing a movie which was be so likable, while at the same time undermining itself so much. The “good honest" thriller style of the 90’s has gone out of fashion, so every attempt to revive it is nice to see. Reacher has the advantage that despite being serious it doesn’t take itself too seriously which is even more admirable if we take into account the casting of Cruise who is certainly not the right person for the role of charismatic guys reeking of testosterone. Also worth mentioning is the cool directing (and that’s not just because of the opening eight minute taciturn sequence) and the emphasis on action scenes which aren’t over the top and involving cheating using CGI effects. Against that, it’s needlessly long. Not that there are unnecessary scenes, but many are longer that they should be and would be more suitable in the cut scenes section on the DVD/Blu-ray. Then there is the predictability of the plot which shifts the meaning of that word onto a completely new level (and it’s nothing to do with the fact that, for some weird reason, we know from the opening scene that this time Barr is innocent). The “who and how" is clear from the very beginning and very soon the “why" becomes apparent too, but the characters find out only after a good seventy minutes. And the biggest mistake you can make is to hire a (non)actor with one of the most charismatic voices on the planet for the role of arch villain, and then to use him as no more than an extra and in just two scenes. Otherwise I was satisfied and hopefully for number two the authors will learn from their mistakes. (09.04.2013)

Ich bin überrascht, aber wirklich positiv überrascht. Anstatt eines actiongeladenen Films habe ich einen noch besseren Krimi-Thriller bekommen, dessen Tempo eher auf eine Panorama-Strecke mit schönen Stillleben eingestellt ist, als auf eine rasante Fahrt auf der deutschen Autobahn. Es ist, als ob man durch die Zeit reist und in eine Ära gelangt, in der Leute wie McQueen, Bronson und Eastwood ihr Unwesen trieben. Dennoch schafft es dieser Film, spannend, unterhaltsam und gleichzeitig intelligent zu sein. Schlägereien und Schießereien fehlen natürlich nicht, der Fokus liegt jedoch eher auf der Geschichte. Absolut mitreißend ist jedoch die fünfminütige Autoverfolgungsjagd, bei der man anstelle von Musik nur das Quietschen der Bleche, Polizeisirenen und das Dröhnen der Pferdestärken unter der Motorhaube von Cruisovas Chemrolet hört. Ein Fortsetzung würde ich auf jeden Fall nicht ablehnen. (28.05.2013)

Today was the day I'd been saving the Jack for. It suited me perfectly. Great action, at times the shots of Jack driving reminded me of similar shots in Speed Racer. Jack was smart and cocky, but he wasn't immortal and he didn't know everything. He's just a really good ex-soldier. Helen had beautiful eyes that hid an intelligence that could expect not to be subjected to blonde jokes. Honestly I'd quite like to read the book because I'd like to know what was going through Jack's mind, that's how intrigued I was by his character. I had fun, Tom didn't come across as stunted, and the story moved along smartly. There was no room for pity, finally. (21.03.2016)

With a few exceptions, I generally don't like these types of movies. This film is shot professionally and has a good cast, so it gives the impression of a solid genre spectacle, but one it cannot fulfill. The director seems to have no clear idea of which genre he wants to be part of. Even a top-notch crime thriller would not be ashamed of the opening scene of the assassination, and the film initially appears serious and repeatedly returns to this expression. But while the murders may look brutal, suddenly a serious scene is followed by shots from a crazy grotesque, and in my opinion, this change of tone does not work at all for the film. Genre hybrids sometimes work and they can be charming, even irresistible. Unfortunately, Jack Reacher isn't one of these in my opinion. The ending is also predictable and completely undermines the feeling of the scenes that were done well. Overall impression: 25%. (28.01.2016)

I’m really not surprised that Tom wanted to play Reacher, even though a 7-foot muscleman would have suited the part better. In any case, he plays marvelously (as if he were making fun of it all in some places), this type of guy suits him. A precisely built up story, emphasis on dialogs and hilarious one-liners. McQuarrie’s firm hand safely delivers One Shot to the desired destination. A little too slowly, unfortunately and there probably won’t be a sequel. Shame. - You think? - All the time. It's hard to expect anything from a film with such a trivially simple title, ordinary marketing, and average posters. But the opposite is true. It is incredibly cleverly shot within its genre, and you have to praise the director's inventiveness and cleverness. Tom Cruise is more than just an ordinary protagonist, unlike Jason Bourne or Daniel Craig’s Bond (I love all three), but while those are followers of dynamic editing, raw directing, camera filters, and kinetic action, Jack Reacher takes it easy, with thoughtfulness and full-contact fights without any enhancements – it’s beautifully slow and hypnotic. One of the best crime films in recent years, brilliantly cast and stylistically stunning. Some shots deserve a “Hall of Fame” award, and the sound design deserves an Oscar. (11.01.2013)

Ein ziemlich guter Film – ab und zu sogar eine "Thriller-Komödie“ – der ein bisschen wie Gibsons Payback – Zahltag ist. Er hat aber ein großes Minus – warum musste dem Publikum von Anfang an klar sein, dass derjenige, der geschossen hat, nicht der Verhaftete, sondern jemand anderes ist? Hätten uns die Filmemacher nicht wenigstens die Hälfte des Films an der Nase herumführen können? Das hätte mich überhaupt nicht gestört. Sonst ist der Film in allen Hinsichten hochwertig. Die Zielfernrohr-Aufnahme am Anfang wurde zwar aus Countdown in den Tod geklaut, aber was soll’s. Es folgt eine tolle Szene nach der anderen, wobei die Badezimmerszene irgendwie pervers lustig war. Bei der sensationellen Verfolgungsjagd tat mit der schöne Mustang leid. Tom Cruise hat mir hier mehr als in Mission: Impossible gefallen, Rosamund Pike hat mir wie immer gefallen, d. h. super gut, und Robert Duvall – der war die Kirsche auf der Kirschtorte. Ich hoffe, dass der Komponist Joe Kraemer nach Jack Reacher mehr solche Aufträge bekommen wird, weil er Ideen hat und fähig ist. (15.06.2013)

You'd think they could always have gotten Nicolas Cage, since he must always be available. Instead, however, they pass the baton to Richard Krajčo's reject hobbit brother, who channels Langdon, the Equalizer, and that fighting guru with his heart in the right place, Michael Jai White, and mixes them all together with the kind of guy who goes on a castle tour and constantly snorts mockingly at every sentence the tour guide utters. It's a film so monumentally lacking in charisma that even Rosamund Pike rolls her cleavage on the table out of boredom, just to give the viewer motivation to sit through the scene. When a bunch of frenetic humor starts coming out of nowhere, it's like someone making fart noises with their armpits at their parents' funeral, and I've forgotten to mention the action scenes, which have no concept or choreography whatsoever, but are dominated by the kind of exposition that puts Ben Hur to shame. And most importantly, I don't know, but if according to the ratings this film really offers that whiff of the "good old-fashioned decent" crime film that makes every one and a half people here clutch at their hearts, I don't understand the low rating of Road House, which it kept reminded me of. Ein spezifischer Action-Krimi oder vielleicht eine Action-Detektivgeschichte mit einem seltsam konstruierten Handlungsverlauf – einer Untersuchung. Der Name Lee Child ist mir natürlich bekannt, bisher habe ich aber keines von seinen Werken gelesen. Vielleicht wird mich die Verfilmung dazu bringen, auch das Buch zu lesen. Tom Cruise brilliert wie immer, er wird immer zu meiner Top Ten gehören. Rosamund Pike wirkte auf mich immer ängstlich, überrascht, verwirrt und verblüfft, obwohl sie besser aussieht, wenn sie kaltblütig und selbstbewusst ist. Die Figur ist halt irgendwie geschrieben. Werner Herzog ist in der Nebenrolle sehr überzeugend. (25.01.2024)

What I find a bit weaker is the actual screenplay. It is based on the book "One Shot", which was translated into Czech as "Výstřel". The foundation is good, but the final outcome felt a bit disappointing to me. True, I don't particularly enjoy similar political thrillers, but I definitely don't want to say that I was completely disappointed. I just think that the film is not as high-quality as I thought it would be. However, the direction is fairly confident and good, the scene with the escape in the crowd is absolutely fantastic, unfortunately, the creators sold it quite cheaply in the trailer. Tom Cruise, however, did not disappoint once again, but I doubt that we will see Jack again in the future. I will rather look forward to Ethan Hunt.
