Schwere Gewitterregen spülen 1982 einen verstümmelten Körper frei. Der Fund ist Anlaß zu einer großangelegten Suche, bei der sieben weitere Leichen entdeckt werden, alle brutal ermordet und entstellt. Die Hypothese, daß man einem Serienmörder auf der Spur ist, wird totgeschwiegen, weil in der Sowjetunion nicht sein kann, was nicht sein darf. Zwei Jahre und viele Leichenfunde später wird ein Verdächtiger festgenommen, doch man kann ihn mangels geeigneter Untersuchungsmethoden nicht festnageln. Der Psychiater Alexander Bukhanovsky ist sicher, daß der Verhaftete Andrej Chikatilo der Täter ist. Erst nach dem Zusammenbruch des kommunistischen Regimes, acht Jahre nach dem ersten Leichenfund, kommt es zur Zusammenarbeit mit dem FBI. Kommissar Burakov kann endlich die Blutproben des Verdächtigen richtig analysieren lassen. Wird sich die Indizienkette endlich um den Mörder schließen oder führt die Blutspur noch weiter…? Der anfängliche theatralische und statische Charakter des Erzählens verschwindet allmählich, die Schauspieler*innen hören mit dem Übertreiben auf, zwischen den Figuren entstehen Beziehungen und die Handlung steigert sich zügig und wirkungsvoll. Und am Ende atmet man nicht. Schade, dass es sich um einen TV-Film handelt, der sich zurückhalten muss und nicht den schlimmsten – kannibalischen – Teil von Tschikatilos Verhalten präsentiert. Eine hervorragende Rolle für Max von Sydow.

An excellent affair for a TV flick. Although the film did not offer a more detailed analysis of the case, procedures with which the investigators came up or any points on which to rely, the creators on the other hand perfectly presented the atmosphere in the Soviet Union of the time and the bullshit with which they fooled the whole nation. There are also perfect performances delivered by everyone who appeared in the film: Stephen Rea, Donald Sutherland, Max von Sydow and Jeffrey DeMunn (especially the last one). Given that this film was funded by American money, it is quite objective. It all makes sense from start to finish. As soon as the mass murderer Andrei Chikatilo appeared on the screen, the suspense made me bate my breath. Moreover, some shots are absolutely amazing. This is a well-made execution of a strong story that is worth seeing.

I caught up with this classic starring Donald Sutherland about the notorious Soviet serial killer Chikatilo, who murdered 52 people, most of them children. For a TV movie, Citizen X is a nice surprise. We follow the multi-year hunt for Chikatilo, who managed to terrorize the children of the Soviet Union for eight years. There may not be explicit violence, but there’s a chilling atmosphere throughout the film and those who like serial killer movies shouldn't hesitate regardless of the year. A high quality and engaging biographical thriller that will continue to captivate even today. Such a strong theme as persecution and capture of one of the most feared mass murderers in history naturally greatly facilitates the acceptance of the film, but it would not be enough in itself if the film had a bad screenplay and direction. The creators surprisingly restrain themselves in the American production, so the film does not indulge in cheap depiction of horrors, but focuses on the psychology of the main characters and their slow investigation. Of course, the portrayal of Soviet reality is not entirely credible, and connoisseurs of the conditions may laugh a few times, but the overwhelming majority of viewers will not be bothered by that. Decent performances, quality direction, good atmosphere. Overall impression: 75%.

Brrr, die eklig schauerliche Rekonstruktion vom Toben der Bestie von Rostow ist gelungen. Dabei hat sich der Film vor allem auf Fakten und Glaubwürdigkeit konzentriert. Er hat nicht versucht, eine düstere Thriller-Stimmung zu schaffen… Oder war es gerade diese dokumentarisch kalte Auffassung, die mich so beeindruckt hat? Stephen Rea und Jeffrey DeMunn sind ausgezeichnet, Donald Sutherland und Max von Sydow muss man auch bewundern. Im Film gibt es viele Szenen, die ich nie vergessen werde… Für mich persönlich ist Citizen X mit – sagen wir mal – The Boston Strangler oder Zodiac - Die Spur des Killers vergleichbar. Deshalb bekommt er von mir fünf Sterne.

A film full of conflicts. On the one hand, its quite gripping, intellectually rich and brilliantly cast and acted, but also uneven and fragmented among potentially strong motifs that all deserve more attention. The film is carried by the premise itself, and the criticism of the Soviet state authorities also deserves praise, but it still leaves the aftertaste of the unexploited potential of the story about the worst mass murderer in Russian history, whose rage and personality the made-for-TV Citizen X fails to fully portray. 70%

A real treat! I literally fell in love with the film after the first viewing. I've seen it many times since and it still holds its charm. Not only is it a great thriller, but it also shows the living conditions in the Soviet Union, a place I really wouldn't have liked to visit. But I love films about it (Burnt by the Sun, East/West). Stephen Rea as the totally overworked head of investigation is brilliant, but everyone is overshadowed by Donald Sutherland. You can tell he is really enjoying the role. Jeffrey DeMunn was also excellent and disgustingly convincing as Chikatilo. I can’t go below 5 stars.
