Barbarella

Yes, it's silly, but it's entertaining silliness and an irresistibly naive attempt at light eroticism on the movie screen. The age of the Flower Power and the beginnings of the sexual revolution are on full display in this comic book adaptation. It's a sex-fuelled romp, with a sexy Jane Fonda in tight-fitting costumes – she is a joy to watch. The way a sweaty Jane destroys the executioner’s orgasmatron is a feat worth of an entire platoon of erotic warriors :) Also worth mention are the extravagant costumes and set design. On a side note, in its day Barbarella was often featured in midnight screenings. (29.12.2002)

Anyone who is even a little more interested in the character that is Roger Vadim must categorically reject the idea that Barbarella is either an intentional parody of the genre or a seriously intended film that got out of the hands of the creators. Vadim simply wanted to shoot a lighter soft-erotic film in the backdrop of the comic sci-fi world. And with the help of the youthful charms of Jane Fonda, he succeeded. It's not a good film, but it has such an entertainingly trashy form that it can attract many people. It truly only steals from the sci-fi genre. Fonda considered her performance in Barbarella as a bigger mistake than all her divorces and love affairs combined, and considering her feminist orientation, she was right. The film is one of the commercial consequences of the crisis in the film industry of the 60s when new forms of expression and limits of the possible were sought. The eroticism contained in the film now seems hopelessly funny and naive, but just a few years earlier, such a film would not have been released at all. Overall impression: 30%. (11.01.2008)

Der Film ist das Ergebnis der Ehe Vadim/Fonda und naiv, amüsant und sexy. Stellenweise dumm. Aber es ist eine so bedeutende Kerbe in der Popkultur, dass es unmöglich ist, den Streifen zu übersehen. Die neuesten Abenteuer erscheinen unter der Marke Dynamite, und es gab bereits das Crossover "Barbarella/Dejah Thoris". Was will man mehr? (03.04.2009)

Wenn ich Flash Gordon fünf Sterne gegeben habe, muss ich es auch bei Barbarella tun. Ich weiß natürlich, dass auch dieser Film kein Höhepunkt der Filmkunst und des Geschmacks ist. Es handelt sich aber um ein unglaublich unterhaltsames (und sexy) Werk. Es ist eine prickelnde und verrückte Science-Fiction-Komödie. Wenn es Flash Gordon nicht geben würde, würde sie mich vor allem an Austin Powers erinnern. Und jetzt entschuldigen Sie mich bitte, ich muss den Soundtrack auftreiben. (23.09.2012)

Comic film from the ongoing sexual revolution, which speaks for itself. A significantly extravagant sci-fi oddity that combines soft-erotica and biblical motifs with fetishistic passages (such as smoking the "essence of man" from a giant water pipe, in which several naked men swim), still captivates with its visual originality, extraordinary eccentricity, and self-ironic (hard to say if intentional) humor. It is a naive kitschy nonsense, but at the same time highly entertaining, psychedelic, and filmed with unprecedented creative enthusiasm. And the stories about the life of the film in the following years and its connection to Jane Fonda's private life are amazing. (24.03.2011)

This is truly incredible nonsense, which is simply a fetish at first sight. And even though I'm not usually into fetishes, I really liked this. Unfortunately, I haven't read the comic, but hopefully I'll get to it sometime. Some scenes here are so surreal that you simply can't help but laugh. David Hemmings is perfect and Jane Fonda is beautiful. Her opening scene is great and I must admit, I thought a lot about how they simulated weightlessness so well almost 50 years ago. (18.01.2014)
