Ztraceni v Mnichově

I feel sorry that I missed this movie when it was screening in cinemas. In Mladá Boleslav it was in cinemas maybe even less than one week and then they changed it either for some cartoon cash cow or another one of the endless line of American superhero movies… But a good Czech movie is hard to find in cinemas. And Lost in Munich is exactly that. Petr Zelenka took advantage of the audience and really toys with them from the start to the finish. What you watch as a film for an hour changed into a film about a film in the next hour. Plus you are following the connections and it all starts to make sense only toward the ending. And it is really funny and entertaining. And the cast is amazing as well – Martin Myšička, Tomáš Bambušek or Jana Plodková. And the fundamental premise of Munich and the brave proposition that the Munich Agreement actually helped us is all that is needed to make even a viewer with the knowledge of history excited. The absolute uniqueness of it all is not worth five stars but still it is one of the most interesting Czech films. (04.04.2016)

Ein Film darüber, warum etwas nicht funktioniert, der thematisiert, dass wir tatsächlich am besten tun, wenn wir so tun, dass es eben nicht geht, und dennoch bleibt er derart perfekt alibistisch und gekünstelt, dass er einem Papagei ähnelt, der lediglich wiederholt, was ihm andere anordnen sagen. Ein potenziell interessantes, jedoch durch inkonsequente Vorgehensweise verkorkstes Konzept. Während Das Jahr des Teufels ein doch recht ziemlich interessantes "Mocument“ war, wirkt die zweite Hälfte von Lost in Munich wie eine sehr hinterherhinkende Verteidigung dessen, warum die erste einen sinnlosen Eindruck macht. Und in Anbetracht dessen, dass Zelenka hier zwischen dokumentarfilmähnlichen Aufnahmen mit reinen Filmaufnahmen sowie kontinuierlicher leer anmutender Hintergrundmusik hin und herwechselt, ist das Ergebnis der Verteidigung ebenso dürre wie der gespielte Teil. Meta-Kümmerlichkeit der neunziger Jahre. Ein mentales Ghetto der ewigen Revision eines nationalen Stereotyps, der liebevoll sich selbst bekräftigt und gerade deshalb überlebt, auch wenn jemand dies zu parodieren scheint. I have a mix of emotions regarding Petr Zelenka's distinctive films. Some of them have impressed me, while others have left me with an average impression. However, I have no problem admitting that Zelenka is one of the most interesting filmmakers that the lackluster Czech film scene currently possesses. I have never associated his name with any significant disappointment. Actually, I cannot speak of disappointment even now. Based on paradoxically enthusiastic responses, I didn't believe in the film, and my instinct did not let me down. Zelenka served me two films in one, but I don't get either of them and I conclude that they don't harmonize together at all. Although the author is inspired by the ideas of historian Jan Tesař, he interprets them in his own way. This time, Zelenka's mystification didn't entertain me; I felt a similar self-centeredness in it as I have perceived in the surrealistic performances of a certain Prague theater in the last two decades. Those people are also content with entertaining themselves and their fan club. Overall impression: 35%. (18.07.2017)

It’s a level better Polski film, this time in a version with French, Munich, and the very beautiful Prague. While I personally don't find it necessary for films like this to be made, I would leave it to the next generation to evaluate them, because I understand that if you fall in love with Day for Night, then you have to act. Ein unglaublich origineller Film. Witzig, verspielt, durchgearbeitet, perfekt aufgenommen, er regt zum Nachdenken an… Und er wird allen eingefleischten Bewunderern von Edvard Beneš gefallen, zu denen auch ich gehöre. Je weniger man über die Handlung von Lost in Munich weiß, desto besser. Die erste Wendung ist nämlich SO unerwartet, dass es mir überhaupt nicht gefallen hätte, wenn ich über sie etwas schon vorher gewusst hätte. Petr Zelenka spielt schön mit dem Publikum. Es geht ihm aber nicht darum, die Zuschauer*innen schadenfroh hereinzulegen. Ach wo, er belohnt das Publikum mit dem angenehmen Gefühl "Ich habe mir gedacht, dass dort alles nicht so ganz… Aber auf diese Idee wäre ich wirklich nicht gekommen, bravo!“ In der Tschechischen Republik ist nach einer gewissen Zeit wieder ein Film entstanden, bei dem ich nichts kritisieren möchte und auch nichts kritisieren kann. It’s truly incredible how Zelenka manages to adapt diverse narrative formulas in favour of a unified idea and an irresistibly satirical characterization of the unchanging Czech mood. The "film-within-a-film" technique allows him to poetically outline the intended plot motifs, which he then humorously develops in a frank, semi-documentary spirit in the fictional process of filming. What's amazing is the ease with which the fictional world mirrors the real one, with all the political, ethical, financial or deliberately absurd problems in the cycle of filmmaking, this time juxtaposed with smart historical satire and more or less obvious winks at the nature of Czechness. In der ersten halben Stunde inszeniert Zelenka eine nicht sehr gelungene bittere Komödie über die Medienblase um einen sprechenden Papagei, um dann den Zuschauern die Augen zu öffnen, dass diese Misserfolg die ganze Zeit absichtlich war, und das aus gutem Grund. "Ztraceni v Mnichově" ist ein gut ausgewogenes (sehr lustiges und zugleich an einigen Stellen trauriges und schmerzlich wahres) Gleichnis über die Hintergründe der Filmproduktion, über das tschechische Volk und darüber, dass der Schein manchmal trügt, natürlich mit einer gewissen Portion Übertreibung. Ein von sicherer Hand geführtes, durchdachtes und bewusstes Projekt mit natürlichen Schauspielern, einer ambitionierten und intelligenten Herangehensweise an das Thema des Münchner Abkommens und einer funktionalen Geschichte voller überraschender Wendungen, die auf tschechische Verhältnisse hinzu noch auf ungewöhnliche und zugleich attraktive Weise erzählt wird. Petr Zelenka stellt erneut unter Beweis, dass er einer der originellsten (möglicherweise der originellste überhaupt) und besten tschechischen Regisseure und Drehbuchautoren ist. Ich habe mich hervorragend über die tschechisch-französischen Beziehungen amüsiert, darüber, was wir von den Franzosen denken und sie über die Tschechen. Zu Recht einer der drei besten tschechischen Filme des Jahres 2015 und konkurrenzlos das beste Drehbuch des Jahres und somit verdientermaßen ein Böhmischer Löwe in dieser Kategorie. In den übrigen Kategorien waren leider noch die Vertreter von Home Care und The Snake Brothers stärker. (14.08.2016)

Petr Zelenka is very specific and a very good author. This isn't just playing with history; this is playing with film, playing with the audience who isn't sure what they're actually watching. And you won't experience this twist just once, but rather several times. Despite the form, the idea here doesn't get lost, which is very intriguing and one that I could easily believe in. And all of this with a peculiar sense of humor. (10.02.2017)

Spectacular! The best Czech movie in recent years. An excellent comedy(?) extending beyond the limits of the genre, unparalleled in contemporary Czech cinema. After a weird trailer, I decided to give it a miss at the cinema, but I regret it all the more now, because I enjoyed literally every minute of it. A clear five stars and a completely new perspective concerning the events of 1938 for me. I recommend not reading up on the movie in advance. All the surprising twists only intensified my experience.
