San Junipero (S03E04)

Certainly the best episode of the third season, and one of the best of the series as a whole. And even though, or precisely because, it is so different from the all the others. The idea is brilliant, as well as the way the script works with it, gradually revealing what it is about. The climax is euphoric. (23.10.2016)

A significantly different episode that seems to get to Black Mirror by mistake from The Twilight Zone. Which, of course, is not a bad thing, especially when it is such a good and emotionally strong episode and considering the fact that there has been no worthy successor of the Twilight Zone for quite a long time, but it simply does not fit in terms of the style, focus and even the message. I don't want Black Mirror to become just a platform for any "any short stories" after some time (not that this is the case with this episode). Nevertheless, a captivating mix of melancholy and optimism with a disturbing taste in the conclusion. The only drawback is the construction, which is a bit too predictable from the very beginning. In any case, it's probably no coincidence that it was Harris, the author of the episode Be Right Back that viewed the theme of death and departure from the perspective of half-empty glass, while here it’s rather from half-full perspective. Excellently done retro-atmosphere combined with a first prototype Matrix (the Paradise Matrix that Agent Smith kept enthusing about). The lesbian storyline kind of spices up this classic romantic movie with a happy ending par excellence. And this season is just what this series needed after all those depressing horrors. After a number of very tense episodes, this one felt like a ready-made treat with a lovely, almost optimistic feeling at the end. Mackenzie Davis in particular is amazing here; I didn't see the cold semi-mechanical qualities from the last Terminator in her for a second. (06.05.2020)
