Five slightly undead stories from the pen of Stephen King and the camera of George Romero. I’m not a fan of anthology films and I wasn’t crazy about Creepshow. For a moment I even considered two stars, but that was prevented by the last story with the beetles, which made me stand on my seat nervously throughout. I hate them. Brrr! On the second place I would put the middle story – a really ugly way to die. On the opposite end I would put the second story, where Mr King himself “excels”, but in an utterly unbearable role. Overall, a jot above-par.

"Wusstet ihr, dass Horror so lustig sein kann?" Der Kurzfilm des Gründers des Zombie-Genres George A. Romero, der hier mit Stephen King zusammenarbeitet, ist voller schauspielerischer Meisterleistungen, verfallenden Leichen und morbiden Humors. Romero scheute keine Experimente und übertrug erfolgreich die Erzählweise des Comics auf seinen Film: Die einzelnen Folgen werden durch animierte Zwischenspiele eingeleitet, intensive Szenen werden durch gezeichnete Rahmen oder Farbtönung hervorgehoben, und das Bild wird manchmal sogar in charakteristische Comicbilder geteilt. Diese visuelle Stilisierung im Comic-Stil hat Creepshow sicherlich geholfen und unterscheidet sich deutlich von anderen Horrorkurzgeschichten. Die zweistündige Laufzeit ist für das Horror-Genre oft drastisch, aber da die Geschichten thematisch unterschiedlich sind, gibt es einfach keine Chance auf Aufmerksamkeitsverlust oder –Gott bewahre - Langeweile.

Romero transposed some pulp horror stories, by master of the genre Stephen King, to the silver screen. Five tales from the world of dread and horror is peppered with King’s wacky ideas and black humor. At some points I felt disappointed that King hadn’t published them in book form. It would have been a delicious read. Maybe the publishers will get their act together some day and publish the original comics in this country (Czech Rep.). The first tale Father’s Day is special for Ed Harris (with hair!), excellent makeup and rather unusual reason why the deceased father leaves his place of eternal rest for a last bite to eat. 90% The Lonesome Death of Jordy Verrill brings us Stephen King in the role of a farmer/retard Jordy who, after a meteorite is discovered, starts turning into a... 85% In Something to Tide You Over we meet a wicked Leslie Nielsen who makes two lovers drink sea water. 85% The Crate offers a teacher a way out of a difficult situation. 75% They're Creeping Up on You, for me the most terrifying story, is about a rich man obsessed with cleanliness under attack by vengeful cockroaches. 85% All of the stories are linked by a really nice story about daddies, pulp horror comic books and a voodoo doll.
