Spiel mir das Lied vom Tod

The best western ever, there is not a single ingredient out of place. Very imaginative direction, great actors and a soundtrack that has long since transcended "mere" film music and become a musical treasure and legend. Leone had a very lucky hand in choosing the actors (as always). Henry Fonda handled his only one role as a villain with aplomb (the American audiences couldn't get over the fact that the model good guy was playing such an asshole), Charles Bronson played perhaps the best role of his career, Claudia Cardinale is a delight to the eye and Jason Robards as Cheyenne is one of my favourite movie characters ever. A must see in widescreen format, the VHS crop amounts to a crime on this cinematic gem. (02.03.2003)

The music improves the image. To be honest, at the beginning, when a dirty, hirsute bloke is shown swatting a fly for three minutes, I thought that in the next 160 minutes I would die out of boredom. Fortunately, that wasn’t the case, and in the end this film entertained me a lot more than The Godfather, for instance. Mostly thanks to the music, the direction and the performances, because the contents don’t stand out. I can’t get rid of the feeling that I will never be a fan of western as a genre. (02.01.2009)

Someone might mind that the genius music loops throughout the movie until you’re blue in the face. And someone might mind that it’s not very comprehensive at times and it’s very hard to watch out for details for those nearly three hours. But I don’t mind, because I’d rather get a temporary paralysis of the eyelid if that meant that I can watch every single second of a movie as genius as this western. (01.07.2014)

Als ich diesen Film das letzte Mal sah, war ich ein kleiner Junge, der Cowboys liebte, und ich fand den Klassiker von Sergio Leone unweigerlich seltsam, langatmig, nicht sehr "dramatisch"... Es hat nur ein paar Jahre gedauert, bis mir klar wurde, dass Spiel mir das Lied vom Tod viel mehr ist als ein Western, nämlich ein absolut fesselndes Beispiel für ein Drama, bei dem die Genre-Anleihen des Wilden Westens nur als Kulisse dienen. Leone konzentriert den Schwerpunkt der Erzählperspektive auf die Details und Halbdetails der exquisit komponierten Kinematographie von Tonino Delli Colli; es ist fast unglaublich, dass sich vielleicht die Hälfte des Films auf die Gesichter der Schauspieler konzentriert. Das Gewicht, das auf der Mimik ruht, ist unglaublich, und ebenso unglaublich ist die Anmut, mit der die Schauspieler sie tragen. Die fast expressionistische Betonung der Augen wird sowohl von Bronson als auch von Fonda mit einer statuenhaften Starrheit gehandhabt, die einem den Atem raubt, während Claudia Cardinales sexy Kuckuck einen zeitlosen Charme hat - Zerbrechlichkeit, Verrat, Verführungskraft. Leone liefert die archetypische Geschichte eines Rächers mit so viel Persönlichkeit, Fokus und Gefühl, dass man sich schwer tun würde, einen stärkeren Film zu finden. Außerdem verstärkt der brillante Soundtrack von Ennio Morricone alle Emotionen um das Zehnfache. Was macht Spiel mir das Lied vom Tod besser als alle anderen Western? Es ist nicht die Geschichte weder Spektakel der Schießereien... es ist das, was ein klassischer Philosoph die filmische Qualität des Films nennen würde. Jewel, legend, gem, and brilliance in every scene from Leone, in every note from Morricone, and in every gesture or word from Bronson, Fondas, Robards, and the beautiful Claudia. Whoever finds this epic boring should just give up on movies altogether. (05.02.2006)

Dieser Film ist einfach ein Juwel, der einen mit seiner Musik, Atmosphäre und individuellen schauspielerischen Leistung vollkommen in seinen Bann zieht und verzaubert. Auch wenn es weit mehr als zwei Stunden sind, langweilt man sich keine Minute und dank der wirklich tollen Musik erlebt man alles in vollen Zügen. Außerdem ist Claudia Cardinale wohl die schönste Frau, die ich je auf der Leinwand gesehen habe, und gerade hier ist sie absolut unwiderstehlich. (02.04.2015)

Aus einem solchen Film ist es einfach unmöglich, etwas Konkretes auszuwählen und besonders hervorzuheben, das es verdient hätte, denn diesen Film muss man in Gänze und mehrfach gesehen haben um zu glauben, dass auch ein Western die Dimensionen eines Shakespeare-Dramas haben kann! (Soviel zu meiner Bewertung) P.S. am 14. 5. 2013 – endlich konnte ich Spiel mir das Lied vom Tod im Kino sehen … Und wieder gibt es nichts hinzuzufügen. Once upon a time there were two Italians who already knew each other well and whose collaboration was apparently a fateful affair. One of them had no problem writing six hundred pages with detailed descriptions of individual scenes and even the actors' movements, so that the visual and narrative aspects of his upcoming project would not contain a single flaw. The other, for his part, reached to the bottom of his musical talent and wrung from it a repertoire of the most breathtaking melodies that not only chill throughout the film, but above all elevate the story of a classic western with taciturn characters into the realm of the most admired and unsurpassed cinematic art. Then there was one beautiful Italian woman, who only had to stand still in front of the camera to the accompaniment of majestic music, to provide an unprecedented, almost soulful experience. And then there were three very charismatic Americans, whose interactions and intrigues seem to get more subtle and spectacular with each viewing, making any other western become mediocre in comparison. Well, this wild bunch is behind the creation of a groundbreaking film that not only changed the look of modern westerns, relegated the old ones to a worn-out commodity and set an unbeatable bar for upcoming ones, but most importantly, it prepared for me such an exotic and untold delicacy that after each new bite I get even hungrier and ask myself if it is even possible to digest and absorb all these different tastes in one sitting. Absolutely awesome in all respects. The acting, the screenplay, the direction, the cinematography. Everything I can think of is excellent. The film doesn’t have any weaknesses. Even if I did find one, it wouldn't matter. The score would make me forget it immediately. That's what happens when true masters work together. There aren’t enough stars for me to rate this. I've been saving this movie for a long time and I was looking forward to it more and more. Finally, the time has come for me to watch it. I was amazed. The first two scenes are simply great and I was just staring with my mouth open. Slowly, but brilliantly built up with a great ending that truly surprises. Leone is not unnecessarily violent, he doesn't show everything, but some scenes are terrifyingly intense. Brilliant direction with a brilliant musical accompaniment and great performances. I want to see this again and then several more times. (23.06.2015)
