Pepa is still waiting for the real, happy life to start. However, he is almost fifty, works in administration and lives in an ordinary regional town. I wouldn’t completely condemn Pepa for living quite an unorthodox life. Well, some people are like that. And that it’s coincidentally Pepa and that the movie talks about him? The movie has to show some sort of extreme. If it showed what’s average, everybody would forget about it and they might even never think about it again. The first half of the movie was, after all, quite good. The period of communism reminded me of comedies from the turn of the millennium, which kept taunting the communists and taunt them until this day. As soon as the story swung into the present day, which shows where the melancholic Papa ended up, the story somehow stops working. Michal Suchánek is good, that’s all. The case is worse when it comes to some of Pepa’s opinions, which turned Pepa into his current self. Some people were, based on the reviews here, offended by this; I wasn’t. Unfortunately, even people like this live among us.

Ein sehr schwacher Film, eine Art Gemisch aus Hündchen und Kätzchen. Der überflüssige Held scheint aus der neuen Welle herausgefallen zu sein, die Hippie-Linie ergibt keinen Sinn, die nostalgische Normalisierung schielt nach Hřebejks Know-how, Suchánek, Blažek, Špalková oder Bendová versuchen, etwas zu spielen. Grossová, die ihr Filmdebüt gibt, ist ein kompletter Fehlgriff. Es wäre nichts passiert, wenn das Thema wie eine langweilige Bachelor-Kurzgeschichte unter den Tisch gefallen wäre.

Pepa hat mich (im Unterschied zu anderen Usern) positiv überrascht. Ist es überhaupt eine Komödie? Ja, sicherlich, sie ist aber ganz anders als die anderen – traurig, still, bitter, tragisch… Manchmal ist sie ein wenig peinlich, was überflüssig ist. Die meiste Zeit ist der Film aber hundertprozentig eindrucksvoll. Der Hauptheld, welchen Michal Suchánek perfekt darstellt, hat kein prima Leben. Er ist aber selbst daran schuld, er weiß es und weiß nicht, was er damit machen soll. Das Drehbuch, das seine Geschichte erzählt, ist nicht besonders kompliziert, es teilt aber genau das mit, was es sagen möchte. Die Regie von Ján Novák ist auch gut. Sein eigenes Drehbuch war ihm offensichtlich wichtig.

Ich habe überhaupt nichts erwartet, bekommen habe ich eine außerordentlich angenehme Überraschung. Ein absolut normaler Film über einen normalen tschechischen Pepa, der im Leben kein sonderlich großes Glück hat, orgastische Erlebnisse muss man bei ihm suchen. Ein hervorragender Michal Suchánek und ein frisch geschriebenes Komödiendrama. Ich verstehe die schwachen Wertungen in der Filmdatenbank nicht.

I was expecting it to be worse, if only because of the director's unflattering filmography. This bitter tragicomedy about a life loser actually has a pretty good premise and aptly captures the reality of everyday life along with the natures of the individual characters. In addition, the couple of Michal Suchánek and Petra Špalková is really good.
