Wonder Wheel

There are a few (and really not many more than a few) amusing moments in Wonder Wheel, but seriously, this is not a comedy, but rather an inaccessible relationship drama in the spirit of Eugene O'Neill's plays. Just as the main female protagonist is torn between her boorish husband and an unreliable lover, the entirety of Wonder Wheel is in conflict between a dazzling visual aspect with extremely kitschy compositions and golden light-infused shots and the sad stories of unhappy characters (which are in defiance of the deliberately unnatural retro stylisation, which gives the impression that the characters are moving about in theatrical scenery). I enjoyed the unintentional (?) overlap of two incompatible styles more than the banal relationship mishaps, diffident acting performances, dialogue written without wit or humour and the rigid directing (the proven shot/countershot technique in dialogue scenes, which comprise approximately 98% of the film, is only rarely supplanted by a longer shot with a more sophisticated intra-shot montage). The saddest thing is that this is clearly not a film by a talentless filmmaker. He primarily gives the impression of being terribly lazy, avoiding the effort to pull more out of himself. Again, the work of a tired artist from which the viewer will also walk away feeling tired. 50% (07.09.2019)

From the fifth minute on, I couldn't shake the feeling that this should have been a theater play. It places even greater emphasis on dialogue than usual, as well as slightly different acting moods. Justin Timberlake handles this combination best, as he can both play innocent and emphasize the dramatic aspect, while Kate Winslet is somewhat restrained until almost the very end. Jim Belushi is completely lost, and his clumsy shouting is occasionally shocking. However, this is still Woody Allen, where actors are mostly just a tool for the main concept, and this time it doesn't fall behind. The retro mood works perfectly despite the small space, and both amusingly intense and sadly sincere moments fulfill their role excellently. Maybe if it wasn't so obvious that it's just a one-act play, I would have left the cinema even more uplifted. (12.01.2018)

Anfangs war ich zugegebenermaßen nicht begeistert von der Thematik dieses neuen Allen-Films, die 1950-er Jahr auf Coney Island? Und mit Kate Winslet? Aber am Ende war ich wieder zufrieden, wie schon so oft, wenn Allen einen Retro-Film gemacht hat. Wonder Wheel wird von dem jungen Justin Timberlake erzählt (und er ist überraschenderweise sehr gut), sein Gegenpart ist ein alternder Jim Belushi (ohne Überraschung großartig, denn er ist seit Jahren einer von denen, die es einfach drauf hat), und dazwischen sind zwei Frauen, die bereits erwähnte Winslet als alternde Schauspielerin ohne Engagement und Juno Temple als blondes Flittchen in Schwierigkeiten. So kann sich Wonder Wheel mit all den typischen Attributen kühn drehen, es gibt zahlreiche Anspielungen auf die Popkultur, es gibt eine verstärkte Liebe zum Kino, zum Theater, viele Zitate aus O'Neills Stücken und natürlich das Schicksal im Sinne antiker Dramen. Das ist nichts Neues oder Überraschendes von Allen, aber es ist wieder eine sehr angenehme Erfahrung. Die erneute Begegnung mit interessanten Dialogen, sinnvoll konstruierten Wendungen und authentischem Produktionsdesign hat einen unbestreitbaren Wert, den nur wenige Produktionen auf der Welt in diesem Umfang bieten. Die Atmosphäre ist magisch und fast greifbar, angenehm kühl im Regen und heiß im schwülen Sommer. Ich hoffe also, dass der Skandal von 2018 nicht Allens vorzeitiges Ende bedeutet. Seine späten Filme sind von Jahr zu Jahr außergewöhnlicher, was besonders deutlich wird, wenn man sie mit den vielen neuen oberflächlichen Filmen von heute konfrontiert. (15.05.2019)

An over-the-top theatrical extravaganza in the fun atmosphere of 1950s New York, backed by musical bangers of the era, as well as the legendary Coney Island – a gratifying backdrop for countless filmmakers. The content is always on the same note, a poignant story of ordinary people and their ordinary lives full of bits of happiness and disappointment. Kate Winslet lightly digs Cate Blanchett at times, and on the whole she succeeds. Justin Timberlake is again heavy on charisma. But don’t expect anything revolutionary. (04.03.2018)

Woody Allen hat wieder sein Ding geschrieben und gedreht und mir hat es wieder Spaß gemacht. Die übersichtliche Retro-Geschichte mit tollen Schauspieler*innen (Kate Winslet und Jim Belushi sind einfach toll) präsentiert einen vertrauten Plot. Das bedeutet aber nicht, dass die Handlung nicht überraschend ist oder dass in ihr unvergessliche Momente fehlen (das Telefonat). Die bunte Retro-Kamera passt am Anfang schön zu der Handlung. Allmählich entsteht aber ein starker Kontrast, was eine super Idee ist. Was mir auch sehr gefallen hat, war die vielleicht einfache, aber wirkungsvolle Metapher mit dem kleinen Pyromanen, der sich so wie seine Mutter nicht helfen kann. (06.01.2018)

Ich will ehrlich sein und zugeben, dass ich mir diesen Film vor allem wegen Kate Winslet ansehen wollte, die ich wirklich sehr mag. Ich bin definitiv kein eingefleischter Woody-Allen-Fan, obwohl ich viele seiner Filme gesehen habe, aber ich habe mich trotzdem entschlossen, Wonder Wheel im Kino zu sehen. Ich muss auch zugeben, dass ich nicht viel von diesem Film erwartet habe, so dass ich nicht enttäuscht, sondern nur überrascht sein konnte. Als Ergebnis habe ich ein ziemlich durchschnittliches Drama bekommen, das zwar in einem netten Retro-Look der 50er Jahre verpackt ist und mit einer sympathischen Besetzung aufwarten kann, aber auf der anderen Seite wird das Ganze durch das Drehbuch und vor allem durch die seltsam geschriebenen Charaktere untergraben, zu denen man keine Chance hat, eine andere als eine negative Beziehung aufzubauen. Doch wie ich eingangs sagte, mag ich Kate Winslet sehr, aber ihre Ginny war wahrscheinlich ihre nervigste Figur, die sie wirklich gut spielte, umso anstrengender war sie jedoch - und als ich im Film hundertmal hörte, dass sie Migräne habe und Aspirin brauche, bekam ich fast Migräne. Außerdem hatte ich etwas Action innerhalb der Mafia-Reihe und die Rückkehr der verlorenen Tochter erwartet, aber irgendwie ist am Ende alles im Sande verlaufen. Kurzum, ein Film, der am meisten durch die Art und Weise, wie er geschrieben ist, geschädigt wird, was vor allem mit der übermäßig theatralischen Darstellung und Regie der Schauspieler beginnt und endet, die eindeutig beabsichtigt, aber von mir als Zuschauer eher unbeabsichtigt war. Now this was a great film to spoil the mood. I liked that the story was set in the 1950s, only to gradually realize that there would be nothing else to like. The talkative lifeguard got on my nerves from the start, the vast majority of the dialogue was dull, and Ginny was beyond unlikeable. Moreover, the story had a very slow pace, and I was bored. Woody Allen didn't score any points with me this time. (05.07.2018)

I almost want to say that this is a classic Woody Allen film, although this time I found his story really simple and it is saved by the performances, which are excellent in all cases, at least as far as the main roles are concerned. Kate probably stands out the most, but the film doesn't give her the space to really shine as an actress. (15.02.2018)

In the category of late Allen films, one of the depressing ones, which builds up deliciously to a damn bitter end. It didn't sit entirely well with me, and I was still dealing with my own moral dilemma of whether it's okay to root for Kate Winslet's character. The reason is that despite her considerable faults, Woody portrays her in such a way that the character of Ginny literally screams for some sympathy and understanding, which is hard to resist at one point. A very strong piece of writing, no doubt, but personally I prefer the other pieces from this late Woody. [65%] (23.11.2020)
