Der Film hat zwar eine Handlungsstruktur mit Pointen, aber es ist nicht saftig und die Regie könnte man als teilnahmslos bezeichnen. Dazu kommt eine Auswahl von Soundtrack-Songs, über die sich streiten ließe. Dem Film würde eine schwungvollere und schnellere Erzählweise guttun. Ein Funke wie American Hustle (die Filme bewegen sich auf einem ähnlichen, US-amerikanischen Retro-Gebiet). (20.02.2017)

A film that seems rather off-putting at the beginning, just to create a state of movie bliss at the end. At the beginning I had no idea what reason I could find to finish watching this movie. Although Matthew McConaughey showed another incredible transformation, at the same time he spoke so technically I thought for a while he fell from the Mars. Luckily, after meeting Édgar Ramírez, the technicality disappeared and the real story began, gradating the film's quality towards a bit shocking ending. What can I say, it was again one of those films I will be glad to remember. (05.02.2018)

An above-average standard reconstruction (in the day) of the biggest gold fraud on earth. Unfortunately made by a director without the necessary knack. The acting is great, and tubby McConaughey rocks. The screenplay is excellent, but has no build-up of tension, and simply tells the story as it unfolds, which is a bit disappointing. And this is another important lesson we can learn from history. (08.12.2018)

A traditionally well-prepared McConaughey, giving his usual 100 percent to his role. Otherwise, however, this is a rather uninteresting film inspired by a true story, which follows in the footsteps of American Hustle in its retro style, but lacking vivacity and passion. Den Trailer und die Verwandlung von Matthew McConaughey fand ich interessant (ich habe gedacht, dass es eine Maske ist, er hat aber angeblich wirklich so ausgeschaut…) und vom Soundtrack von Daniel Pemberton war ich begeistert… Über die wahre Geschichte habe ich nichts gewusst, den Regisseur habe ich nicht gekannt. Ich bin ins Kino gegangen und bereue es nicht. Gold ist ein leichter, frischer und stets übersichtlicher Film, der auf eine schöne Art und Weise das abenteuerliche Genre und die dramatische Geschichte eines hartnäckigen modernen Goldgräbers kombiniert, welcher sucht und sucht. Und obwohl er vielleicht schon fündig wurde, ist er sich dessen nicht bewusst. Es klingt natürlich wie ein riesiges Klischee. Im Laufe der zwei Stunden habe ich aber kein einziges Mal daran gedacht, dass ich mir etwas anschaue, was ich eigentlich schon viele Male gesehen habe. Im Gegenteil, der Film hat mich ständig angenehm überrascht. Ich habe es gut gefunden, dass der Hauptheld eigentlich sympathisch ist (und Gott sei Dank kein Hai im Stil von The Wolf of Wall Street) und dass ich kein Problem damit habe, ihn zu verstehen. So konnte ich die ganze Geschichte miterleben. Zwei Dinge haben mich sehr überrascht – die letzten fünfzehn Minuten, über welche ich nicht mehr schreiben werde, und Bryce Dallas Howard, die ich bis zum Nachspann nicht erkannt habe. (17.02.2017)

Through and through a mediocre story about how a fat bum came to happiness, based solely on yet another sweaty and enthusiastic creation of master Matthew, which flounders along in a muddled two-hour film with no significant emotional moments, surprising twists or truly original directorial ideas. And not even the the well thought-out structure of the script or the decent retro jacket can completely save it. (15.08.2017)

After Syriana, it was hard for me to imagine a better plated table than the one I'm once again invited to join with a smiling Robert Elswit and Stephen Gaghan, along with McConaughey smoking in the background, whose acting method of taking his shirt off during the film is a particularly drastic experience here. But it's this overload of egos that makes Gold a first-rate, dynamic, and entertaining spectacle, though unlike Traffic, Syriana, or, say, There Will Be Blood, it lacks any socio-economic relevance and fails to bridge the character of a slimy little man who, while not evil, is ultimately not all that interesting. The only thing that makes him a distinct character is McConaughey's method of "A Slimy Creep in Three Steps; chapter Teeth, Baldness, and Pimples". I must confess, I ended up missing Elswit's brilliant framing of even simple dialogue scenes, never settling for three cuts of talking busts, characters entering the frame from uncharacteristic close by, or the camera gradually revealing the structure of a scene with its movement. But to set it in a bigger whole than an actor's Oscar-hopeful ramblings in a story based on a true event, I would have fallen asleep better. (23.05.2017)

The film seemed utterly mediocre to me. I was only impressed by the performance of Matthew McConaughey, whom I don't like very much, but he was so sleazy this time that it was impossible not to notice him. I didn't care for his Kenny at first, but the longer I watched, the more interesting he got. I don’t think I’ll watch Gold again, but I'll remember Kenny for a long time. (19.08.2017)

I didn't think a movie with this title and Matthew in a similar role - mainly visually - could captivate me much, but in the end, it turned out that the story was wonderfully acted and presented with a pleasant sense of humor, so I just enjoyed myself. Not right from start to finish, but I certainly didn't mind watching it one bit. (18.04.2017)
