Manolo und Joaquin sind nicht nur beste Freunde, sondern auch beide schon von Kindesbeinen an in ihre gemeinsame Freundin Maria verliebt. Als Maria ihre Heimatstadt in Mexiko für einige Zeit verlassen muss und nach Europa geschickt wird, bleiben Manolo und Joaquin mit gebrochenem Herzen zurück und schwören sich, auf Maria zu warten und sie nach ihrer Rückkehr zu heiraten. Während Joaquin genau wie sein Vater eine heldenhafte Karriere als Hüter von Stadt und Land anstrebt, ist der junge Manolo hin- und hergerissen: Soll er die Erwartungen seiner Familie erfüllen und ein ehrbarer Stierkämpfer werden oder dem Ruf seines Herzens folgen und sich der Musik widmen? Als Maria endlich wieder nach Hause zurückkehrt, gerät Manolo im Wettstreit um ihre Gunst in ein unglaubliches, buntes Abenteuer, bei dem er erkennen muss, was ihm wirklich wichtig ist und das ihn durch drei phantastische Welten, in seine Vergangenheit und in seine Zukunft führt. Manolo und das Buch des Lebens ist ein sehr frischer, origineller und spontaner Animationsfilm mit interessanter Animation, einer netten Geschichte, angenehmer Musik und sympathischen Charakteren. Ich hatte eine gute Zeit damit und vor allem weiß ich jetzt, dass Mexiko das Zentrum des Universums ist... 7,5/10

I was expecting it to be quite boring again, and that the story, in its essence, is just about two men fighting over one woman, but the fact that it is set in Mexican scenery and Mexican mythology adds something extra to it, just like the animation style that was chosen. It is not necessarily pandering animation, but it definitely has its charm.

I have a clear subjective aesthetic problem with this film. Even though The Book of Life is generally praised for its beautiful and quality animation (which probably is objectively true), for me it was a painful experience. It’s just an awful mess. And I also don’t understand who it was made for. The story isn’t interesting, let alone cute or funny. I can imagine someone taking their kids to cinema… poor little things, after a couple of minutes they will fall asleep in boredom. Probably it’s targeted at the Hispanic community in the US, but I don’t know… The Book of Life does have some strong Mexican vibes, but that’s the only thing I could find.
