Gus Lobel war sein ganzes Leben mit Leib und Seele Baseball-Scout und kümmerte sich wie ein väterlicher Freund um das Wohl der jungen Sportler. Zu seiner eigenen Tochter Mickey allerdings schaffte er es nie, ein gutes Verhältnis zu pflegen. Als Gus jedoch schwer erkrankt und auch in seinem Beruf immer weiter abfällt, eilt Mickey ihrem mürrischen Vater zu Hilfe. Beide versuchen, die damaligen Probleme aufzuarbeiten - doch sie stoßen auf unerwartete Herausforderungen. Sein Leben lang war Gus Lobel als Baseball-Scout für Vereine der 1. Liga auf der Suche nach den größten Talenten an Highschools und Colleges unterwegs. Unter allen Umständen möchte er dem Ruhestand entkommen und macht sich deswegen auf den Weg nach North Carolina, wo er einen weiteren herausragenden Nachwuchs-Baseballspieler finden will. Was er jedoch nicht ahnt: Sein Chef plant, seinen Vertrag auslaufen zu lassen - Gus sei mittlerweile zu alt und seine antiquierten Scout-Methoden seien nicht mehr zeitgemäß. Zu allem Übel wird bei Gus auch noch eine Krankheit diagnostiziert, die ihm das Augenlicht rauben wird. Kurzentschlossen reist ihm seine Tochter Mickey, zu der er eigentlich kein gutes Verhältnis pflegt, aus Sorge hinterher. Eigentlich hatte sie ihr altes Leben, das durch den frühen Tod der Mutter und den zeitraubenden Beruf des Vaters gezeichnet war, hinter sich gelassen. Ihrem Vater hat sie die damalige Zeit nie verziehen. Als erfolgreiche Anwältin hat sie sich mittlerweile ihre eigene Welt geschaffen und steht sogar kurz vor der Beförderung zur Partnerin in ihrer Kanzlei. (Super RTL)

Sometimes you need a fairy tale like this for your audience's mental health, even if it is painfully predictable, but it has a positive feeling, which is never enough.

I went to see this flick mainly because it stars Clint Eastwood. I remember reading he would never play in another movie again. It was around the time Gran Torino came out and his acting performance in that one was flawless. But then all of a sudden this nobody from the middle of nowhere shows up who’s made no movies so far and decides to make an absolutely average drama and wrap the whole thing in nationalism and baseball and Clint just walks right into the middle of that. I don’t understand why. If it wasn’t for Clint, I’d give this movie one, or two stars tops. Trouble with the Curve might be too much of a pro-American movie, but Clint is still the kind of actor that even non-Americans will find interesting. But his role in this movie being his last one is pretty sad. You see some time halfway through the movie, I was actually wondering whether I want to watch it to the end. I even skipped about fifteen minutes and when I got back to the movie, nothing significant had happened. But anyways, Clint made me watch the movie to the end eventually. I kept telling myself that there would be some part that I’d find interesting. But in the end, this didn’t happen and Clint’s last performance became one of the most mediocre movies I’d seen recently.

It's a pretty routine flick, but luckily Clint Eastwood is in it and he's a classic, so his fan base won't regret it in the end. But if the story had revolved around a more entertaining sport (like tic-tac-toe, jumping jacks, or chess), it might have been a little better.

Clint Eastwood did promise that he would not return in front of the camera, but I think everyone is glad that he did not stick to this resolution. After his performance in the film "Gran Torino", it would be a shame for him to end his career when he still has more to offer to the world. This was also evident in the film "Trouble with the Curve", although on the other hand, the role created for him was essentially identical to the one he portrayed in his own film "Gran Torino", which is a pity. Clint has already lived quite a few years, he will celebrate his eighty-third birthday this year, but he still has a lot to show even in less similar roles.
