MINDHUNTER (2017)

Englisch A cold and ultra-carefully shot crime procedural for demanding viewers who this time don’t need any major twists, but are rather content with being presented very small pieces that fit unobtrusively into a large mosaic. ()

Season 1 (2017) (S01)

Englisch It’s OK, but I was expecting something wilder. The first season excels in its almost documentary-like portrayal of the study of the behaviour of mass murderers, a subject that David Fincher is really good at. Thematically, Mindhunter is immensely rich and interesting. Cinematically, however, it is repetitive in places, chatty, overly intellectual even in moments when it is not entirely necessary. But it doesn’t have any significant weak spot. The second half was better when, in addition to the interrogation of the prisoners, the personal ties and confrontations between the main characters began to shake out. Likewise, the main character's transformation from rookie to seasoned veteran is impressive because it's so unforced and natural. If the next season is a little more nimble, this miniseries has the potential to be great. ()

Eine neue Art von Killer (2017) (S01E01)

Englisch Smart, cool, economical, surgically fine-tuned and at the moment absolutely devoid of any heart or pulse. But that is very likely to be a problem only for the first episode. ()

Forschungsprojekt (2017) (S01E02)

Englisch After a lukewarm and cursory introduction, this is where things get lively, or Fincher excelling at what he really knows: an ultra-realistic depiction of psychos. The interrogation scenes are great – the casting, the dialogues, the timing. A notch better than the previous episode. ()

Neue Einsichten (2017) (S01E03)

Englisch Probably a dream come true for all die-hard fans of David Fincher. OK for the rest of us so far, but after the second episode I would expect the pacing and atmosphere to be put in second gear. In the third episode, however, we slow down a bit again and the protagonists kind of stagger in place, just like the viewer who is expecting a second Se7en, but Mindhunter probably has a slightly different target audience and ambition – it feels much more documentary-like than cinematic. At least for now, it’s a bit early for a more comprehensive assessment. Most interesting so far is the deepening of a strange buddy relationship between the two FBI agents. ()

Kategorisierung der Subjekte (2017) (S01E04)

Englisch Kapadia is perhaps a little more audience-friendly and less dark in his directorial approach. At the same time, however, the fourth episode feels a bit monotonous and repetitive, with similar dialogues, moments and situations throghout. The atmosphere is great, but it does need a bit of build-up. ()

Pennsylvania (2017) (S01E05)

Englisch A solid rural detective story. Good interrogations, suspense, atmosphere, and the slight odd spark between the FBI agent and the doctor. A piece of no significance to the whole, but as one jigsaw to the overall puzzle it makes sense. ()

Der Altoona-Fall (2017) (S01E06)

Englisch A verbose, wannabe sophisticated episode. Everyone speaks in a sort of super-smart and distant way, but there's no fluidity, chemistry, or any kind of exciting improvisation in the main characters' interactions. Everything is just a surgically precise script and dialogue, but pretty cold and detached ()

Ortswechsel (2017) (S01E07)

Englisch The seventh episode focuses well on the background of the protagonists and their personal problems and vices. The creators give the viewer a glimpse into the lives of the "good guys" and somewhat balances the otherwise one-sided view of those behind bars, thus centralizing the overall focus on the issue. ()

Der Rektor (2017) (S01E08)

Englisch The school scene was perhaps a bit pointless, but probably crucial for the development of the young detective – it depends on what direction it eventually moves in. In any case, the personal levels of the protagonists can be portrayed and elaborated with more ease and more involvement of the viewer than those of the "anti-heroes", at least for now, and if we ignore some neat moments during the interrogations. ()

Erschreckendes Interview (2017) (S01E09)

Englisch So far, the only episode that moves along briskly, after which you automatically want to see the next. The tension and drama at the police station is more interesting than the prisoners. ()

Das Geständnis (2017) (S01E10)

Englisch A fitting and worthy finale to the series – with an understandable open ending for the second part. The final minutes are a kind of highlight and one of the most thrilling scenes of the whole miniseries, which is complex in what it tells about, but at times quite sterile and not very friendly to the average viewer. ()

Season 2 (2019) (S02)

Englisch The second season has a very similar concept and dynamics as the first. Likewise with its ills in the form of a few unnecessary episodes that only glue together the broader context of the story without any greater impact. Even so, it is a very careful procedural about a very interesting subject with several now perhaps iconic scenes (Manson). The ending tends to suggest that we'll see another season, but so far it doesn't look like it. ()

Episode 1 (2019) (S02E01)

Englisch The personal planes are brilliantly played out, with the new cunning boss, Ford and his panic states and the slightly shocking finale. The second season skillfully continues where the first one left off, and the fact that there are 2 years between them is not visible at all. ()

Episode 2 (2019) (S02E02)

Englisch The routine of the middle episodes. Hopefully a murder in the neighborhood will have a big impact on one of the main characters to get the story moving a little faster. The atmosphere remains gloomy, it plays on a serious note, but we've been waiting for 10 episodes for Mason to come on the scene, so hopefully we'll see. ()

Episode 3 (2019) (S02E03)

Englisch Another episode in the middle that comes up with absolutely nothing new and rather digresses and makes the whole serial killers story more vivid. If they hadn’t released this episode, nothing would have really happened. ()

Episode 4 (2019) (S02E04)

Englisch The best interrogation of the entire series so far. Plus an intriguingly evolving story line in Atlanta and the climactic final minutes, where perhaps even more disturbing than the scene itself is the specific tone of Jason Hill's score. ()

Episode 5 (2019) (S02E05)

Englisch It finally happened. Mason on stage and, as expected, the scene with him is amazingly acted and written. ()

Episode 6 (2019) (S02E06)

Englisch Understandably, it fails to replicate the tension and breathtaking clash of two such different worlds as in the previous episode, but even so Mindhunter doesn't lack suspense past the halfway point, and there's no shortage of interesting developments surrounding another active killer, as well as the confrontation of personalities on the side of the law and the pulling of strings in political circles. ()

Episode 7 (2019) (S02E07)

Englisch At times a very peculiar unraveling of the Atlanta case. Rather than a tense and unsettling atmosphere, there is an emphasis on proper detective work. As a viewer experience, is a tad lower than the previous episodes. ()
