Tanzlehrer Ramu-Gupta aus Mumbai wandert in die USA aus. Dort will er sich seinen großen Traum erfüllen und Karriere als Schauspieler machen. Doch die angebotenen Rollen beschränken sich zumeist auf billige Erotik-Produktionen. Frustriert vom ausbleibenden Erfolg beschließt Ramu, sein Glück als Kellner zu versuchen. Doch als er die ehemalige Aktrice Sharonna kennenlernt, schlägt er schon bald einen neuen Berufsweg ein und wird zum gefeierten Super-Guru... (Super RTL)

There are plenty of romantic comedies that entertain but are forgotten after a while. The Guru is a slightly different case. It stands out for its incredibly original execution. The story of an Indian man conquering America and porn actresses is indeed brilliantly executed. Directorially, musically, and especially choreographically. The script captivates not only with the filming of a porn movie but also with the perfect characters of Ramu and Sharon. Their behavior is firmly framed by romantic barriers, but the perfect acting of Heather Graham and Jimi Mistry elevates it just a little bit higher. Thanks to them, their characters are not lifeless puppets but people who live their "movie" lives. The Guru is a comedy that will definitely entertain you at first glance, but I can't guarantee that you will have the same fun watching it a second time.

Auf den ersten Blick keine große Sache, aber im Rückblick bietet die romantische Komödie Der Super-Guru (2002) einen Einblick in mehrere Phänomene. Einer davon ist das Eindringen von Pornos in Mainstream-Genres als akzeptables Thema. Filme wie Zack and Miri Make a Porno (2008), Meet Monica Velour (2010), Lovelace (2013) und die Serie Swingtown (2008) bewegen sich in ähnlicher Weise an der Grenze. Ein weiteres Thema könnte das allmähliche Eindringen der westlichen Faszination für Bollywood in Monsoon Wedding (2001) und später in Liebe lieber indisch (2004) sein. Als drittes Thema haben wir die extreme Dürrheit aller Schauspielerinnen, die eine Hauptrolle oder zumindest eine prominente Rolle anstrebten (wir grüßen Brittany Murphy im Himmel). Und schließlich gibt es natürlich noch extreme Eso.
