Super 8

Ein ehrgeiziges Projekt, dessen erster Teaser ein Jahr vor der Premiere veröffentlich wurde und das alle bekannten Klischees vom gegebenen Genre und der Zeit recycelt. Abrams ist ein brillanter technischer Regisseur, seine Fantasie reicht jedoch für die Verbindung von Zusammenhängen in einem entsprechend spitzenmäßigen Drehbuch nicht aus. Das bestätigt u. a. auch der größte Schwachpunkt des Films – das dumme und schlampig gemachte Ende. Super 8 ist nicht langweilig, man freut sich über die Atmosphäre der 80er, über die gut gespielten, angenehmen Kinderfiguren. Aber Dinge wie "Spannung“ oder "Überraschung“ sind nicht mit dabei. Es ist eine Möchtegern-Horrorvariante von E.T. (und seien wir ehrlich – auch eine überflüssige), bei welcher die "Zeitzeugen“ keine besondere Aufregung erleben. Gegenwärtigen Teen-Zuschauer*innen, die mit dem Herrn der Ringe, Matrix und Twilight aufgewachsen sind, wird im Film nichts gefallen. Wenn Abrams dem großen Autor, der in ihm die Liebe zum Film weckte, Ehre erweisen wollte, sollte er das mit einem Brief machen und uns nicht überflüssig ein Jahr auf ein außergewöhnliches Ereignis warten lassen. Spielberg 101? No way, this is a far more advanced class. Apart from the final emotions between parents and children, everything works in this film. What surprised me the most was how likeable the kids are, and their good performances – especially Elle Fanning and Joel Courtney. If Abrams made a serious sci-fi thriller with the same skill, I would be jumping in joy, even higher than now, but this badass E.T. phone home is just great. You won’t see hectolitres of blood flowing from the screen (though there are a couple of proper horror scenes: the attack on the petrol station and the underground liar), but you’ll get hectolitres of love for cinema. Unless you need to prove to yourself or someone else that family adventure films are below your “level”, this film can never offend you – so I don’t understand the initial displeasure here in Filmbooster. It’s a very subjective full house (I am aware of several screenwriting crutches in the second half), but also very strong. The most pleasant film of the year. (30.08.2011)

Abrams ist ein Trendsetter, kein Plagiator, und an den Super 8 ist dieser Spagat zwischen der Veranlagung eines Machers sowie der Essenz seines Projekts doch ziemlich zu sehen. Jedoch dies ist nicht das einzige Schisma: Nehmen wir einmal an, die Super 8 sollten ein Kinderfilm sein, aber in Wirklichkeit ist es vielmehr für eine Generation "alter Vatis". Die derzeitige "Jugend mit Kopfhörern“ auf den Ohren (um eine der Figuren im Film zu paraphrasieren) hat nicht viel Chancen, die Präzision der Hommagen zu würdigen, welche J.J. dem großen Meister gegenüber ablegt. Jedoch ich als generationsmäßige Zielgruppe, die sozusagen die Unheimliche Begegnung der dritten Art oder E.T. - Der Außerirdische wie die Muttermilch verabreicht bekam, bekam da wieder ein anderes Ende, welches eindeutig auf effektsüchtige Zuschauer abzielte, die eher moderne Blockbuster verabreicht bekamen. Abrams hätte sich schlichtweg entscheiden sollen - entweder ein total konsequenten Retrofilm oder eine aktualisierte Moderne zu drehen. Ich kann nicht sagen, dass mir die Super 8, keinen Spaß gemacht hat, im Gegenteil. Insbesondere die erste Hälfte ist purer Filmluxus, und als ich mich während einer Ultra-Spielberg-Szene daran erinnerte, dass ich im selben Kinosaal während der Normalisierungszeit einst atemlos E.T. - Der Außerirdische gesehen hatte, lief mir eine schöne Gänsehaut über den Rücken. Doch leider hat sie nicht bis zum Filmende überlebt, wo die mysteriöse Ursache aller Phänomene entlarvt wird und nur allzu abgedroschen aussieht. Ja und die Kinder haben ja recht, wenn sie so oft sagen: "Halt´ doch endlich den Mund!" Man hätte sich hier daran halten sollen. Die sprachsynchronisierte Version bekommt klare ***, aber da ich mir der Grausamkeiten bewusst bin, welche die schrillen Stimmen tschechischer Bengel doch anrichten, erhält das strittige Projekt J.J. Abrams bedingt noch einen Stern mehr. (25.08.2011)

The spirit of the late seventies / early eighties and a bunch of kids setting out for adventure. And it’s good, really good. The kid actors can actually act, suspenseful at times and it simply works as it should, until an unbelievably over the top ending where the eighties feel crumbles in Abrams’ hands because the movie turns into a modern blockbuster à la Cloverfield and not what it was emulating up until then (and making reference to) in other words E.T., The Goonies, Stand By Me and It. Paradoxically, in spite of the finale, it applies here that “all’s well that ends well" thanks to the outstanding zombie credits with a typical Abrams punchline concerning the title. In any case, I am content, but not as enthusiastic as I was about Son of Rambow. That movie managed what Super 8 did. Only better, less flashily and overall more pleasantly and sincerely. Well, although... We can find this during the closing credits of Super 8 too, I’m telling you. (14.09.2011)

J.J. Abrams uses exactly the trick that Steven Spielberg used thirty years ago to captivate audiences in E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. What the children do and how they explore the circumstances surrounding the unknown phenomenon makes sense. What all the various parents do, however, feels less genuine, and suddenly, the majority of adult characters seem very unfamiliar, and the viewer must root for the children's efforts to succeed down to the last detail. This may explain why a wider range of viewers were disappointed. But after a minute, I understood that I would love the main group and had a clear view. A nostalgic sci-fi in the most positive sense. Dank der Produktion von Spielberg konnte man keinen mysteriösen Sci-Fi-Thriller erwarten, wie es der Teaser-Trailer möglicherweise vermuten ließ. Das hier ist einfach ein Popcorn-Spektakel. Jede Generation, außer euren Großmüttern, findet darin etwas für sich. Es ist hauptsächlich ein überbewertetes Kinderabenteuer, bei dem es um das Überleben aller anderen geht, außer den Hauptcharakteren. Die erste Hälfte des Films ist zweifellos die beste, vor allem wegen des übertriebenen Zugunglücks und des nur angedeuteten Monsters. Die zweite Hälfte gleitet jedoch in unnötige Sentimentalität, zufällige Wendungen in der Handlung und ein digitales Finale ab, bei dem das Monster wahrscheinlich nicht so beeindruckt wie von den Machern beabsichtigt. Aber sonst funktioniert alles überaus gut, selbst die kindlichen Darsteller haben mich nicht gestört. Von Zeit zu Zeit schadet diese Art von Familienspaß einfach nicht. (27.08.2011)

The first half was definitely a lot stronger, because by the second half I was having trouble keeping my attention at times. In fact, I started to get slightly lost in the fight scenes and I wasn’t really feeling any suspense. I'm definitely not disappointed though. You can smell good old Spielberg and it maintains its grandeur. The child cast in particular was excellent. Elle Fanning has grown up and is already a great actress. A weaker 4 stars. (09.12.2011)

It is evident that nostalgia does a lot because Abrams made his film as a clear tribute to Spielberg's 80s family sci-fi films E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial and Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Not only does he keep up with them, but at least when it comes to effects, cinema has advanced a bit, making it a more enticing spectacle for today's audience. Such a train derailment and subsequent catastrophe full of explosions and flying wagons must bring excitement to every fan of flashy blockbusters. Nevertheless, Abrams received considerably weaker reception and significant doubts. After all, in terms of subject matter and directorial style, today's cinema has moved somewhere else, more toward comic book and video game adaptations. As for Abrams' direction, I can't fault anything, he has a good eye for casting child actors and Elle Fanning is so adorable to the point that praising her to express my sympathies toward this young actress would risk accusations of pedophilia. Abrams knows how to work well with child actors and has a sense for careful tension-building. But what can I say, I have also outgrown this production, and when I recently revisited Spielberg's filmography, films like Jaws, Duel, etc., despite being old, they still worked on me just as they did before, but Close Encounters and E.T. really disappointed me. It's just not the same anymore. Overall impression: 55%. (23.06.2014)

Abrams carried this baby in his head for a really long time and his care is evident throughout picture. In story terms, this is a typical King movie (J.J. is a big fan) with some references to Spielberg’s most famous sci-fi. Excellent casting of the kid parts, gallons of emotion, perfect music by Giacchino, suspense, entertainment and a feeling that once upon a time everything was somehow better and slower moving. This film is so simple that it’s not even nice. Yes, Abrams knows how to ignite the protagonists, himself, and even the viewer. Yes, it is a sincere film that won't offend anyone. But everything is a cliché worn a hundred times over that often leaves you astonished, unfortunately not in a completely positive sense. It is perhaps a slightly unconventional film about aliens (from the perspective of the predominantly child main characters), but that doesn't make it valuable. But it can’t be denied that Abrams knows how to direct actors, the chemistry between the main characters is excellent. There's no need to dissect the visuals, that is already clear, but having the feeling that for 112 minutes I am essentially watching a children's film, that probably wasn't the intention (family entertainment). A quite hesitant film. The trailer was probably about 200 percent better. (07.01.2012)

Ach was, die Expendables-Action-Gottheit darf sich an die ruhmreichsten Zeiten erinnern, aber ein nostalgischer Rückblick auf abenteuerliche Science-Fiction-Filme, die in dem Sinne familienfreundlich gewesen sind, dass für jeden etwas dabei war, gefällt uns nicht mehr? Das verstehe ich nicht ganz. Meiner Meinung nach ist Super 8 wirklich super. Die technische Seite ist unglaublich perfekt, die Geschichte wurde im Stil der Filme von Steven Spielberg, Joe Dante a Robert Zemeckis geschrieben. Kurzum, eine Film-Delikatesse. J.J. Abrams erweist Spielberg dieselbe Ehre, die Michael Giacchino mit dem (wieder einmal) großartigen Soundtrack John Williams erweist. Die Kinderdarsteller*innen spielen einwandfrei, die Stimmung ist magisch, spannend und oft auch (natürlich absichtlich) ziemlich witzig. Die Tricks von ILM sind fantastisch. Ich habe wirklich nichts zu bemängeln. (24.11.2012)

As an homage to Spielberg and amateur filmmaking it works very well, but as an ambitious sci-fi project from one of today's most gifted filmmakers, Super 8 falls far short of expectations. The narrative is terribly childish at times, deadly serious at others, and eventually becomes slightly inaccessible due to the increasing number of deaths. There is no denying that Abrams delivers another smooth and entertaining film, that the child protagonists are mostly likeable and quite believable, and that the story will always find its way to genre fans, but the film as a whole shouldn't feel so unpolished and spectacular, and it shouldn't be marred by a completely off-kilter ending that has absolutely nothing to do with first-rate sci-fi. I'm glad I saw it, but there's really no risk of another round in this case. 65% (28.06.2013)

A strange but in touches quite imaginative mixture of The Mist (the Darabont one), Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Alien, and War of the Worlds. Super 8 certainly has something to say to its genre rivals, and it certainly has a lot to offer an audience that digs similar subjects (conspiracies, the "secret" involvement of the US military, the gradual unraveling of long-forgotten crimes, and the pervasive mystery, darkness, and fear of the unknown). In the final impression, it is an above-average, completely professionally made spectacle, which probably lacks most of all deeper emotional capital (it is quite difficult to identify with the characters even at this nearly two-hour running time) or any major moment of surprise. Technically brilliant (J.J. Abrams is a safe match for Spielberg in this regard), emotionally a bit austere, and an underdeveloped tribute to the master.
