The Descendants - Familie und andere Angelegenheiten

Wenn man eine starke Geschichte hat, ist es nicht nötig, dass sie sich auf den Hawaii-Inseln abspielt. Sonst ist es ein angenehmer Einblick in die Familienbeziehungen vom Vater und seinen Töchtern, die sich von der sterbenden Mutter verabschieden. Ein bisschen Rührung, ein bisschen Ehrlichkeit, ein bisschen Humor. Alles wird dezent und sensibel dargestellt. Der Film ist aber nicht außergewöhnlich, er überrascht das Publikum nicht und enthält auch keine größere Dramatisierung. Vier Sterne erreicht der Film dank Clooney, zu dem seine Rolle perfekt passt, und auch dank Matthew Lillard, der vielleicht das hellste und lebendigste Element des Films ist. Sideways war eine größere Überraschung und hinterließ markantere Spuren. (17.01.2012)

"Hallo, hier Clooney, ach wissen Sie, der Tod, das ist ja keine leichte Sache, besonders wenn man zwei gesunde Kinder hat, Millionen auf deinem Konto, ein Haus auf Hawaii und eine Frau, die mit einem Immobilienmakler fremdgegangen ist ..." - "Ich weiß, George, aber rufen Sie mich nicht mehr an ..." Ein therapeutisch gesehen zahnloses und emotional instantes, taubes Produkt, welches unfähig ist, zuzugeben, dass die wahre Würde des Todes im Film ein wenig anders aussieht als dieses vorgekaute, lauwarme Roadmovie, welchem es an Bitterem und Realistischem vollends fehlt ... Es tut mir leid, dass ich gezwungen bin, so etwas zu schreiben, jedoch Clooney ist derzeit ein wenig der Jeckyll und Hyde - einerseits ein kluger Kritiker der heutigen Gesellschaft, andererseits ein Ingenieur menschlicher Herzen im Dienste des kapitalistischen Realismus. The Descendants - Familie und andere Angelegenheiten sind trotz ein paar netter Szenen (das Zwiegespräch Clooney - Tochter im Pool oder eine Szene bei den Freunden meiner Frau) meines Erachtens auf eine ähnliche Art und Weise neben der Kappe, wie Up in the Air. Ich denke, dass bei einem Film, in welchem im potenziell stärksten Dialog, d.h. Vater-Tochter, der Vater durch eine Familientherapeutin ersetzt wird, nicht alles richtig ist. Nicht einmal die Welt, an der man sich rührt beeindruckt. Meine Sache. (10.01.2012)

Spoilers - When I'm supposed to experience a family crisis with the main character, I don't want to sigh over Hawaii. George certainly delivers his performance to the fullest extent (even though the diligent father doesn't really suit him), but this bumpy journey is ultimately disappointing. It's the supporting characters led by the unsympathetic idiot Sid and, above all, the screenplay that are to blame. I can't engage in suffocating depression when a few seconds later I'm supposed to laugh at absurd situations, and I certainly don't enjoy watching a story that keeps going and going - and doesn't end. Matt doesn't come to terms with his wife's death or infidelity in any way, he merely functions in order to be there for his daughters, and five minutes before the closing credits he whispers the obligatory "Goodbye". It's only thanks to Clooney's brilliantly conveyed emotions that the third star also arrived on the sea wave. Unfortunately, Payne's approach to thought-provoking drama is once again not for me. A solid relationship drama, with the novelty of Hawaii at the forefront, delivering a surprisingly distinctive, considerably relaxed atmosphere that contrasts with a tense story about a dying mother and a dysfunctional family. Alexander Payne has reinvented the world with Shailene Woodley, so thumbs up for that, and George Clooney plays his typical likeable character with aplomb. It's a shame about some of the expected second-rate twists, but it maintains good diction in key scenes thanks to a conversational script that's pretty polished. For the author of the renowned Sideways, this may not be entirely a coincidence, but his main weapon. (12.04.2016)

The Descendants - Familie und andere Angelegenheiten habe ich mir das erste Mal vor zwei Jahren angeschaut und bis bis heute nicht darauf zurückgekommen. Damals hat mich die Geschichte nicht angesprochen, heute kann ich das nicht behaupten. Es kommt mir so vor, dass es sich um einen Film handelt, der die Stimmung des Zuschauers trifft oder eben nicht. Und da ich ein großer Anhänger von bittersüßen Filmen im Sinne von das Leben über sich selbst bin, bin ich auch zufrieden. Clooney spielt hervorragend, und für Shailene Woodley habe ich eine Schwäche, egal wo und was sie spielt. Ein hübscher Streifen. (11.10.2017)

I first watched this film years ago, and while it didn't disappoint, it also didn't leave a lasting impression, hence my initial three-star rating. However, after today's rewatch, I found myself adding an extra star. Admittedly, I didn't find anything particularly exceptional in this movie. Yet, as I watched, I couldn't shake the feeling that I was witnessing a slice of real life. Sure, in reality, I don't often encounter people who own a piece of Hawaii, but once I set aside this minor detail, what remained was a tale of ordinary people presented in a way that felt quite believable. Throughout the almost two-hour duration, I found myself engaged. George Clooney as Matt King certainly played his part, but it was Shailene Woodley's portrayal of his daughter, Alexandra, that truly impressed me. / Lesson learned: Hawaii isn't always a paradise. George Clooney was hoping for an Oscar nomination with this film, which he eventually won, but for me, Brad Pitt in "Moneyball" was better last year. George was still good, especially in terms of being relatable. In the last film I saw with him, "The Descendants," he was a bit distant, but here he showed us all the emotions he is capable of. However, he is not the only one leading the film, it's also his children. Actually, his whole family. Alexander Payne and his team absolutely deserved the Oscar because the story they created is truly unique. Strong, complicated, and well-developed. The character development is excellent, some characters are truly one-of-a-kind, none are the same, they are all unique. Someone like Sid is truly a prime idiot. It's worth watching because of the acting performances, and for me, the strong script as well. It's true that I might have expected a little more. I just don't know how to name it. I would have expected a story with this theme to be emotional, but I didn't feel any emotion for the entire duration of the movie. Perhaps the cumbersome and rather clichéd approach contributed to this. I wasn't too impressed by the occasional overacting of some of the actors, perhaps only George Clooney portrayed his character very believably and without unnecessary affectation. Judy Greer irritated me the most with her acting. (50%) (24.10.2022)
