Die erfolgreiche Lektorin Margaret Tate macht es ihrer Umwelt nicht leicht. Vor allem ihr junger Assistent Andrew Paxton hat unter ihrer Ungeduld und ihren übertriebenen Ansprüchen zu leiden. Doch dann läuft das US-Visum der Kanadierin aus. Um ihre Ausweisung aus dem Land zu verhindern, muss sie schnellstmöglich einen amerikanischen Ehemann präsentieren. Keine einfache Angelegenheit für eine allein stehende Kratzbürste. In ihrer Verzweiflung erpresst Margaret den unbedarften Andrew, sich als ihr Verlobter auszugeben. Dass damit ihr ganzes Leben auf den Kopf gestellt wird, ahnt sie nicht. Denn bei einem Antrittsbesuch bei Andrews Eltern in Alaska wird die Schwiegertochter in spe nicht einfach nur überschwänglich empfangen. Ein unterdurchschnittlicher Film mit Sandra Bullock, der durch die Anwesenheit von Betty White und ein bisschen von dieser Massachusetts-Landschaft, die vorgibt, Alaska zu sein, etwas gewinnt. Ryan Reynolds kein Kommentar, das Umfeld des Verlagshauses blieb ungenutzt.

Hundertprozentig erfüllte Ambitionen einer schablonenhaften Hollywood-Romantik mit unwiderstehlich sympathischen Schauspieler*innen und einem Hund im Garten. Ein super Beispiel für ein perfektes kommerzielles Produkt / radikal beschränkte Möglichkeiten der Kreativität der Autoren. Ich mag Sandra Bullock und Ryan Reynolds, dieser Film hat aber schon ein bisschen wehgetan. Warum wird im neuen Jahrhundert nicht lieber die Schablone von Tatsächlich ... Liebe kopiert?

While the plot may seem far-fetched at first glance (who wouldn't be lured into this situation despite the expressed risks?), the progressing storyline, clever jokes, and all the appropriately adjusted romantic clichés work marvelously. However, the biggest highlight is Sandra Bullock, who looks and performs at her best in her career and every line or gesture of hers melts me completely. When I add the natural chemistry with reliable Reynolds, satisfaction grows far beyond the level of a charming romantic comedy.

Neither a decent cast nor a few successful jokes can hide the fact that this pseudo-romantic comedy is something we have seen a thousand times, but mainly that it has already crossed the imaginary limits of kitsch, meaning that the family must naturally be well-off, friends and relatives are understanding, and the story deals with pseudo-problems. Overall impression: 40%.

This is a classical romantic comedy with which it doesn’t even matter what Hollywood stars play the lead roles of the two opposites. It would work out fine every time. Nevertheless, Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds did a good job and turned the film into a pleasant comedy that will provide you with a good time chilling on your couch.
