Bliss Cavendar (Ellen Page) ist Siebzehn, lebt in einer Kleinstadt in Texas und hat die Nase voll von ihrem heimatlichen Dorf: nichts als Tüllkleider, Hochsteckfrisuren und Schönheitswettbewerbe. Eines Abends fährt sie heimlich nach Austin, um sich ein Rollerderby anzuschauen. Von dem rasanten Sport und den wilden Mädchen in Minirock, punkigen Netzstrümpfen und Rollschuhen ist sie schnell begeistert. Ohne das Wissen ihrer Eltern wird sie schon bald in das Team aufgenommen und zum gefragten Rollergirl. Dabei lernt sie auch den Musiker Oliver (Landon Pigg) kennen – eine Romanze beginnt. Als jedoch kurz vor einem wichtigen Finale ihre größte Rollschuh-Konkurrentin „Iron Maven" (Juliette Lewis) entdeckt, dass Bliss nicht alt genug ist, um ohne Einwilligung ihrer Eltern Derbys zu fahren und Oliver sich plötzlich nicht mehr meldet, beginnen die Probleme und Bliss Traum, auf der Skater-Bahn die Welt zu erobern, scheint zu platzen... Ein hervorragender und unterhaltsamer Film zum Entspannen, der so schnell wie auf Rollschuhen saust. Roller Girl – Manchmal ist die schiefe Bahn der richtige Weg ist voll von sympathischen Schauspieler*innen (Ellen Page, Kristen Wiig, die Familie…), er hat eine gemütliche Stimmung, einen guten Soundtrack sowie eine sehr solide Regie. Vor Drew Barrymore muss ich den Hut ziehen – besonders die Szenen auf der Bahn hat sie toll gemeistert. Der Film bekommt von mir vier Sterne und noch ein Stück dazu.__PS: Haben Sie auch darüber nachgedacht, wo sie "den Kerl, der den Vater von Bliss spielt" gesehen haben? Ich habe ihn erst am Ende erkannt.

On the one hand, I have to praise how the scenes on the rink are handled, some of which are really good - I'm especially glad Zoë Bell is in the film, because she should be getting as many roles as possible - but on the other hand I find the film to be a classic about growing up, uprooting and trying to make things right again. The romance is also essentially unnecessary.

New collective, new passion, parents' disapproval - I have seen all of this many times before in worse or better variations. But Drew Barrymore proves to be a very skillful creator, who knows when to reach for a perfectly fitting rhythmic song and when to let the pleasant small-town atmosphere take effect. And above all, she knows how to come up with scenes that subtly play on a nostalgic note, whether it's throwing keys into the cornfield, dad watching television in the van, or the girls fighting and throwing food at each other. The biggest highlight is the romance in the pool, I haven't seen such an impressive love scene in a long time.

Ellen Page's charisma and cuteness know no bounds. Her "Marco" was not to be missed as well as countless other gestures and faces:))) Whip It is really a perfect diversion in which Drew Barrymore probably (probably definitely) acts better than she directs, but in this case I don't really care too much. It's first and foremost a sweet, funny, and well-acted film (I still love Juliette Lewis to this day and she looks pretty much the same.), Drew Barrymore is perfectly cast in her role, and Ellen Page is one of the most charismatic young actresses I know:)) If I take away a few clichés and a the slightly excessive running time, I come out with some 85%, which is very decent above average for a film of this type.

Competitive kick-ass girls, who certainly didn't have much impact on the level of textile consumption, had already won me over years ago and were still fun to watch today. I suffered through the somewhat cliché rebellion against the parents and the reconciliation that followed without major damage to my mental health. As far as I’m concerned, Drew Barrymore really pulled it off.
