Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow

Ja, der Film hat eine schwache Story. Wenn man ihm jedoch diese Tatsache vorwerfen würde, wäre es so, als ob man in Schindlers Liste mit Dinosauriern gerechnet hätte. Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow ist nämlich ein pures Fan-Vergnügen. Sein größter Vorteil ist das, was Star Wars hat und 90 % der zeitgenössischen Hollywood-Produktion nicht haben. Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow ist eine schöne Hommage an alte Filme. Er enthält einen angenehmen Humor, eine ausgezeichnete heroische Musik und sympathische Helden (Jude Law und Angelina Jolie sind großartig, nur Gwyneth Paltrow erschien mir ein bisschen unsicher, als ob sie nicht wüsste, was sie spielen soll). Die Ausstattung braucht keinen Kommentar, das tibetische "Entspannungstal" erinnerte mich an Rivendell aus Der Herr der Ringe. Manchmal war ich sogar gerührt. Wenn der Film eine spezielle Schwarzweiß-Form hätte, wäre er perfekt. PS: Der Film deutet eine Ära an, in der echte Schauspieler*innen durch digitale Schauspieler*innen ersetzt werden. (11.01.2005)

Although The World of Tomorrow is playful and its patina of old movies is charming, the flimsy and predictable story cannot be hidden by the most compelling visuals. There were moments when I was actually bored. Even so, Conran's film reminded me a bit of some of Karel Zeman's films with its visual innovation and retro mood. A deliberate essence of stupidity. I can’t understand why anyone would want to make something like this and why anyone would want to watch it. As an attempt at naive retro sci-fi it’s successful, as a film for the 21st century viewer is an epic fail. Listening to most of the dialogues felt like slow, painful death; if the film was half an hour longer, I wouldn’t have been able to write this review. (04.08.2010)

Warum soll ich so tun, als ob ich etwas Neues mache, wenn alle anderen so tun? Warum nicht Farbe bekennen, dass alles Wesentliche schon da war, und einen spaßigen und naiven Retrofilm mit futuristischen Gimmicks, niedlich schrecklichen Schauspielern, der Atmosphäre alter Comic-Pulps und einer Handlung trashigsten Trashs schaffen? Conran hat es geschafft, sehr gute Arbeit zu leisten... Sein Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow ist eine ausgewogene Mischung aus Retro (alles oben genannte) und modernen technischen Techniken mit einer seltsamen Atmosphäre aus Farbfilmen, alten Fotografien und Comics. Mit noch mehr Humor und Perspektive wäre Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow fast makellos und eng verwandt mit der ähnlich konzipierten Indiana Jones-Trilogie. Allerdings wird er manchmal durch eine zu große Verliebtheit in seine eigene visuelle Perfektion und einen Mangel an Distanz zur Trivialität der Geschichte getrübt. Aber es funktioniert immer noch als ein Spektakel, das fast parodistisch schematisch, ansteckend lustig, abenteuerlich wild und fröhlich albern ist. Das Spiel mit Retro zahlt sich für Conran und Co. an fast allen Fronten (Schnitt, Schauspiel, Regie, Soundtrack, visuelles Styling) aus, und wenn man sich darauf einlässt, hat man einen der unterhaltsamsten Filme der Saison vor sich. Bei aller Naivität ist er viel intelligenter als 99 % der Abenteuerproduktionen aus Hollywood. Übrigens, ist es nicht symbolisch, dass der Eintritt in eine neue visuelle Epoche des Kinos gerade durch die Rückkehr eines Designers zu den unsterblichen Jahren der 1920er und 1930er Jahre erfolgt? The stylized visuals are complemented by excellent sound and a great orchestral soundtrack. However, the story lags a long way behind the quality of the technical aspects. Although it is completely obvious that this is intentionally naive as a dime novel, but perhaps they go too far. It’s nice that it was basically made by one person in his garage, but that is no excuse for all of the shortcomings. Another disappointment is Jude Law: he simply isn’t the heroic adventurer type. Conversely, the lately rather back-seated Paltrow seems to really enjoy her role as the journalist. Another plus point is the goading humor between the central duo which, luckily, works, saving a lot. (01.11.2004)

A lot of blinking, lively dialogues, and one big toy that I can't play with. Jude Law is forever a character actor for me, who has nothing in common with a smiling action hero, and the cold Angelina is pure agony this time. The only significant advantage is that something is constantly moving, breaking, or flying on the screen, but in terms of how much was said about the film during its creation and how the creators boasted about it being a historic milestone, it quickly deservedly fell into oblivion. The plot-driven and especially the punchline have fizzled out, nevertheless it is an artistically remarkable film that references famous movies of the past and evokes the atmosphere of classic adventure film and literature. It has a touch of Verne, a touch of Trsouka, and the creators of American sci-fi from the 30s. Overall impression: 65%. (01.12.2007)

An unusual approach to a fascinating story. A wonderfully fairytale approach with elements of thriller and sci-fi. Some of the scenes reminded me at times of my all time favorite, Star Wars. It’s just a shame that in places (especially during the second half) the movie rather loses pace; otherwise I’d give it 4 stars. (31.05.2006)

Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow ist in vielerlei Hinsicht ein schönes Geschenk Hollywoods an das Publikum, das an das geflügelte Wort von der Traumfabrik erinnert. Fantasievolle, amüsante und kluge Begegnungen mit Nostalgie. Schauspielerisch lohnenswert. (15.02.2020)

Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow sieht immer perfekt aus – egal, aus welcher Perspektive ich den Film betrachte. Die Schauspieler*innen. Die visuelle Seite. Die Retro-Stimmung. Das witzige Drehbuch und die unterhaltsamen Dialoge. Die allgegenwärtige Fantasie. Shearmurs Musik. Es ist ein Prachtstück, das von vielen unterschätzt wird. Mit einer nostalgischen Träne im Augenwinkel kombiniert es die Abenteuer von Biggles mit der Unterhaltsamkeit von Star Wars und einer Imagination wie von Karel Zeman. Fünf Sterne. A generously produced fan’s homage to film adventures. It has so many quotes and visual ideas that a day later I’ve already forgotten what it is supposed to be about. I didn’t get bored, for sure, and I admired the boldness of the creators that, notwithstanding the poor quality of the special effects, send the heroes into a relentless series of huge set-pieces, but by the end I was missing a more solid director power and I could no longer bear Gwyneth Paltrow, who has forgotten how to act and whose annoying character destroys the godly Angelina in five minutes. That said, it’s likeable bullshit with a filmmaking soul. 70% (24.01.2019)
