Nachdem der wie ein Hund gehaltene Danny seinem Peiniger entfliehen kann, fängt für ihn ein neues Leben an. In den Händen eines blinden, sanften Klavierstimmers und dessen hübscher Tochter lernt die Kampfmaschine erstmals Menschlichkeit kennen. Von frühster Kindheit an wurde Danny von dem brutalen Gangster Bart wie ein wildes Tier in einem Kerker gehalten. Er wurde ohne Wärme, Zuneigung und jeden Kontakt mit Kultur einzig zu dem Zweck dressiert, auf Befehl wie ein Kampfhund gnadenlos über Barts Feinde herzufallen und dessen Besitz in illegalen Gladiatorenkämpfen zu mehren. Als Bart eines Tages einen Unfall erleidet und Danny auf eigene Faust die Freiheit entdeckt, gerät er an den blinden Pianisten Sam und dessen Tochter Victoria. Eine besondere Beziehung nimmt ihren Lauf. Doch Bart denkt nicht daran, seine wertvolle Kampfmaschine einfach so aufzugeben und begibt sich auf die Suche nach Danny... (RTL II)

Eine angenehme Überraschung in Form von Jet Lis introvertierter Art, einem anständigen Inhalt, der vor allem durch Morgan Freeman verstärkt wird, und natürlich einer brillanten Choreographie, die Jet Lis Haupttalent - die Kampfkunst - zur Geltung bringt. Abgesehen von der Tatsache, dass dieser Film konzeptionell erschöpft und von der Handlung her vorhersehbar ist, bleibt Entfesselt ein intelligentes und gut gemachtes Spektakel, das auf einer Nicht-Action-Saite spielt. Leterrier verbindet auf sehr angenehme Weise Merkmale der Hollywood-Action mit europäischer Langsamkeit und rauem Humor.

Von so einem Film habe ich als Teenager geträumt. Schade, dass er erst jetzt gekommen ist. Es ist eine außergewöhnliche Kombination aus einem gut funktionierenden Drama, einer einfachen Actionprämisse, einer ausgezeichneten Kampfchoreografie und dem französischen Charme. Jet Li wirkt endlich menschlich und sympathisch, Morgan Freeman spielt seinen typischen Mentor und dazu Massive Attack.

A picture full of clichés that works thanks to the original directing, the actors, the modest running length and decent pace, despite it being a rather obvious variation on Léon: The Professional. The alternation of “intimate" sequences (although we have seen this a hundred times already) with action works pretty well, but unfortunately they don’t seem to belong to the same movie, which is also the greatest problem with this movie. And although there isn’t much action, what there is is worth it.

Amélie from the gritty corners of Glasgow, or the perfect combination of the fierce style of young French directors at the turn of the millennium and the fantastic action choreography of the Hong Kong masters in an enchantingly naive and aggressively brutal action fairy tale, which as a European high-concept blockbuster is also wonderful historical evidence of the peak of production achieved by Besson’s Europa Corp., as no one else has ever put together such a diverse mix of niche-hip names (Massive Attack, RZA, Jet Li, Morgan Freeman, Bob Hoskins, Luc Besson, Yuen Woo-Ping).

A classic, quality, but no longer surprising Jet-Li action flick, poorly masked by a higher message in the form of unquestionable ideas about the need for friendship, love and the fact that the right family is always a support. Had it stayed with just that message, led by the always great Freeman, it would have been a great film. But combined with the breaking of all possible limbs, it's another Made by Besson single-use piece of crap.
