Ivan Olbracht's novel about the infamous robber was adapted into a musical in 1970s, as performed by Divadlo na provazku, a theatre in Brno. The filmed performance takes place in a natural amphitheatre where the country songs of the drama about Nikola Šuhaj and his beloved Eržika intertwine with the reactions of the audience. “They killed a guy from Koločava”, says the prologue about the dead bandit. Then, the story of fateful love, which is disrupted by machinations of the authorities as well as betrayal by Nikola's friends, unfolds. The libretto was written by Milan Uhde, whose work was banned at that time, so his name is missing in the credits. The role of a slick usurer is excellently portrayed by Bolek Polívka. (Febiofest)

Ein Wander-Hippie-Musical über einen Räuber aus der Karpatenukraine – so etwas konnte nur im Theater Divadlo Husa na provázku entstehen. Die Lieder habe ich gekannt, den Film nicht (und die ursprüngliche Vorstellung überhaupt nicht); aber genau so habe ich ihn mir eigentlich vorgestellt. Es ist lyrisch, tragisch, sehr einfallsreich und originell. Der Film hat einen Zauber. Wenn er zu Ende ist, denkt man noch lange über ihn nach und im Kopf klingt die ausgezeichnete Musik. Miroslav Donutil ist wirklich toll. Genauso gut wie sein Nikola haben mir aber auch die Figuren von Bolek Polívka und Jiří Pecha gefallen.

Whether it’s The Magpie in the Wisp or this, it's all the same crap anyway. The revolutionary "youth" in several ways... Or, as others noted, Ballad for a Bandit is a film for contemporary witnesses, or a memory of a play from the Goose on a String theater, which, of course, was only very loosely approached. Nothing more.
