Der Polizist Cristi (Vlad Ivanov) lässt sich mit der Mafia ein und fliegt auf. Nun folgen ihm verdeckte Ermittler auf Schritt und Tritt und hören seine Wohnung ab. Daher gibt sich die schöne Gilda (Catrinel Marlon) als seine Geliebte aus und drängt ihn zu einer Reise nach La Gomera. Cristi soll die geheime Pfeifsprache der Inselbewohner lernen, damit er trotz Überwachung mit der Gaunerbande kommunizieren kann. Pfeifend versuchen sie den Matratzenfabrikanten Zsolt (Sabin Tambrea) aus dem Gefängnis zu befreien, denn der ist der einzige, der weiß, wo die 30 Millionen des letzten Coups versteckt sind. Doch alle Beteiligten spielen ein doppeltes Spiel und bald geraten die Ereignisse außer Kontrolle. (Alamode Film)

La Gomera ist ein wirklich seltsamer Genre-Mix - im positiven, aber auch im negativen Sinne. Die Idee der Pfeifsprache ist wirklich beispiellos, und obwohl sie nicht gerade eine hygienische Art der Kommunikation ist, hat sie doch ihren Reiz. Storytechnisch fand ich den Film anfangs etwas langweilig und inkonsistent, was sich glücklicherweise in der zweiten Hälfte änderte, als man nicht mehr so recht wusste, wer mit wem und wer gegen wen ist - insofern schätze ich die Unvorhersehbarkeit der Charakterentwicklung, auch wenn sie vielleicht manchmal zu verwirrend war. Ich verstehe die Einordnung des Films in das Genre der Komödie nicht, denn der Film enthält keine ausgesprochenen humoristischen Momente. Wie ich schon sagte - ein sehr seltsamer Film!

An interesting film thanks to a novel idea, but I expected more. The main character is a cop who gets involved with the drug mafia and learns code talk by whistling. It is very original, but nothing much of interest happens in the film. Praise should be given to the gorgeous Catrinel Marlon, who shows up naked, and the final shootout has something going for it, but it's not enough for me. It lacked verve and I don't understand the comedy label. Story***, Action**, Humor>No, Violence>No, Entertainment***, Music**, Visuals***, Atmosphere**, Suspense*. 5/10.

My great joke about it being as if the Romanian New Wave had been relegated to a genre setting fizzled after I found out that Porumboiu made it, so indeed the Romanian New Wave had been relegated to a genre setting. The horrible apathy and ordinariness is inspiring in some ways, and actually quite funny, but it often just got on my nerves. Most notably in the "humorous" scenes, which operate on a "Here's a joke. Yup, it’s lying right here on the ground. It's gonna lie there for a while. But you have to pick it up if you want to laugh. So, what's it gonna be? You don't want to? I don't care." In many ways, the protagonist is reminiscent of the protagonist in Sorrentino's The Consequences of Love.
