Sex and the City

Ich weiß auch eine Menge über Sex, aber gleichzeitig habe ich keine Angst davor, HBO-Hits hinter FX, Showtime und Starz zu verweisen. Aber je älter ich werde, desto toleranter bin ich gegenüber dieser Retro-Sache. Besonders nach einer kontrastreichen Begegnung mit The Carrie Diaries. Es wäre schade, die Serie für schlechter zu halten, als sie ist, wenn man sie nur flüchtig kennt. (07.02.2009)

Carrie Bradshaw knows a whole lot about sex and she isn’t afraid to ask! Lucky for her; I am afraid of asking why this foursome always wear such asexual, horrible clothes. Metropolitan forty-somethings, what can you do? You can’t explain to them that life isn’t about pulling a young buck, recalling better times, trying to hook Mr. Big and shopping for one-use-then-dispose high-heeled shoes. It’s watchable (once in a while), although, more than a series, this is an obvious commercial for Fashion TV in a slightly more bearable guise. And dialogs about the vagina, its crisis and their own problems (a great episode, by the way). An average show that went under because the producers didn’t know when to stop and so kept on giving us more commerci... um, episodes without there being any reason for their existence. Because Carrie Fisher told us everything she knows about sex and life in the first three seasons. And that was shamefully little. And with too few revelations. In fact, the constantly shrouded Parker is the biggest minus of the whole series. You wait and wait, but get nothing. (10.02.2022)

Sex and the City was one of the most successful television projects of the 90s and an incredibly successful business brand, where product placement had gradually been elevated to a new level of quality. The plot of each episode revolved, for example, around the problem of which brand of handbag to bring to a snob party... The series, based on the autobiographically-inspired columns of the well-known journalist Carrie Bradshaw, portrays the life experiences of four successful women from the American upper middle class, particularly their difficulties in building romantic relationships. It was an opportunity of a lifetime for the actresses, who, with the exception of Sarah Jessica Parker, were not very well-known but played their roles convincingly. This series doesn't have a message and, to be honest, its popularity partly relies on similar foundations as the famous Millionaire series from the 70s, thus on the desire to identify with successful idols and their status. Sex and the City is also (I'm not sure to what extent intentional) a caricature of the feminist movement, focusing on (pseudo) problems of wealthy middle-class mothers. The series has a light-hearted, slightly comedic tone, making it acceptable to a wider range of viewers. Overall impression: 50%. (18.01.2008)
