Kira ist zurück! Zehn Jahre sind seit dem Tod von Musterschüler Light Yagami vergangen. Er versetzte damals als erster Kira die Welt in Angst und Schrecken – doch nun häufen sich erneut mysteriöse Todesfälle rund um den Globus und eine virale Videobotschaft von Light verkündigt die Rückkehr des „Herrschers über Leben und Tod”. Doch nicht nur Kira ist wiederaufgetaucht: Auch Interpol fühlt sich erneut bedroht und schickt einen Privatdetektiv, den Nachfolger von L, nach Japan, um die Kira-Sonderkommission bei ihrer Arbeit zu unterstützen. Diesmal sind aber mehrere Death Notes im Spiel, von denen jeder Besitzer seine eigenen Pläne hat. Schon bald entbrennt ein heißer Kampf um die Vorherrschaft der todbringenden Notizbücher … (KAZÉ)

I can't help but think that the Death Note film series has become like a stirred porridge, where the creators don't know when to end it. It's not that it's unpleasant to watch at all; on the contrary, it's quite enjoyable, but I don't think the story still has much to say and continues to evoke the same level of tension. True, but that transition from manga to live-action adaptation has never really been successful.

The action is great, the actors aren't bad, in some ways it's similar to the previous installments, in some ways it's completely different, but ultimately it's once again insanely overdone. If it hadn't ended after everything that happened, the rating would be higher. It's definitely not a bad film, it's well made, it has its pluses and minuses (for example, the casting of Fujii Mina and her character altogether was completely worthless), but when all’s said and done it's a slightly above average film that definitely has something to offer.
