Am Rande eines nördlichen Königreichs beschützt ein mittelalterlicher Krieger das Reich vor mächtigen Monstern, Drachen und okkulten Gefahren. In seiner grausamen Sammlung von Köpfen abgeschlachteter Bestien fehlt nur noch einer - der des Monsters, das vor Jahren seine Tochter brutal getötet hat. Getrieben von Trauer, Wut und einem unbändigen Verlangen nach Rache jagt er wild durch die Weiten des Landes und wartet auf seine Chance, das Ungeheuer zu töten. Als der Tag kommt und er die blutige Spur die das Monster hinterlässt wittert, ahnt er nicht was auf ihn zukommt. Ihm steht ein Kampf auf Leben und Tod bevor, bei dem es nicht nur um sein sondern auch um das Schicksal des ganzen Königreichs geht. (Indeed Film)

Ein Kerl rennt ab und zu aus einer Hütte in den Wald – Schnitt – er kommt mit einem Kopf von einem Monster zurück, der Teil seiner Sammlung wird. Ein Film ohne Szenen, die sein Kern sein sollten, sein Gewürz, eine Attraktion für die Zuschauer*innen. Ein schönes Beispiel dafür, wie wichtig im Film die Atmosphäre ist. Weil sie das Einzige ist, was die Autoren mit dem zu Verfügung stehenden Budget bewältigt haben und was ihnen auch gelungen ist. Sobald es zu einer Andeutung der Konfrontation vom Haupthelden und den Monstern kommt – eine wird sogar teilweise gezeigt – muss man darüber eher lachen. [Sitges FF]

I finally watched The Head Hunter after two years, and although the potential was much greater, it wasn't a complete waste of time. The film has quite decent visuals and only one character, a believable Viking with awesome armor, who hunts goblins and trolls and then hangs their heads at home as trophies. I liked the attention to detail, and even though there isn't much dialogue, the film doesn't get boring, mainly thanks to its appropriate 70-minute running time. The most disappointing thing about the whole film is that it doesn’t show any of the fights with the monsters, which is disgraceful considering the premise. Even though the budget wasn’t big, they could have at least included a fight with bandits or another Viking. At least the ending was very unexpected and uncompromising. Those who enjoy Viking themes or the game “Skyrim” might be satisfied. Story**, Action* Humor>No, Violence**, Entertainment***, Music***, Visuals****, Atmosphere****, Tension***. 6/10.

I think I can safely say that I've never seen anything like this. For a film with hardly any actors or plot to have such a perfect atmosphere, is something that hasn't been seen yet. I can't shake the feeling that even a single action scene would totally ruin the whole film. If I compare the Head Hunter with megalomaniacal blockbusters overflowing with pathos and CGI, this is a total victory of minimalism and quality filmmaking. P.S.: Since there was no attempt at taxidermy, staying in that cabin must have been a real challenge for anyone with any remaining sense of smell.
