A new adaptation of William Makepeace Thackeray's literary classic, Vanity Fair is set against the backdrop of the Napoleonic Wars, and follows Becky Sharp (Olivia Cooke) as she attempts to claw her way out of poverty and scale the heights of English Society. Her story of "villainy, crime, merriment, lovemaking, jilting, laughing, cheating, fighting and dancing" takes her all the way to the court of King George IV, via the Battle of Waterloo, breaking hearts and losing fortunes as she goes. Umfassende Romane wie dieser schreien geradezu danach, zu einer Serie verarbeitet zu werden. Und ich bin begeistert. Dieses neue Vanity Fair ist weit entfernt von der letzten großen Verfilmung mit Reese Witherspoon in der Hauptrolle. Die Neuverfilmung steht nicht im Widerspruch oder Gegensatz, sondern hat nur eine andere Atmosphäre und mehr Zeit für die vielen Wendungen der Handlung. Becky Sharp ist eine klassische Heldin, deren Darstellung eine große Herausforderung für jede Schauspielerin ist. Die Verfolgung ihrer Lebensgeschichte vor dem Hintergrund der napoleonischen Kriege stellt naturgemäß etwas höhere Anforderungen an das Publikum, da diese Zeit in keinem Genre häufig vorkommt. Doch jede Geschichte hat ihre Licht- und Schattenseiten, und so ehrgeizig Becky auch ist, ihre Freundin Amelia Sedley ist die Tugend in Person. Und doch bilden sie beide ein perfektes Bild derselben Epoche. Ein Leckerbissen für Liebhaber von umfangreichen Romanen.

I wasn't very enthusiastic about the first episode, but then it caught my attention and I quite enjoyed the serial form of the classic historical novel "Vanity Fair". I give the filmmakers a thumbs up for their successful adaptation. (75%)
