Der spanische Edelmann Rodrigo Díaz lässt nach einem Kampf der Christen gegen die Mauren hochrangige Muslime frei. Daraufhin wird er vor das Gericht seines Königs gestellt. 
Spanien, im 11. Jahrhundert. In blutigen Schlachten versuchen christliche Armeen, die von Mauern besetzte Iberische Halbinsel zurückzuerobern. In dieser angespannten Situation lässt der spanische Edelmann Don Rodrigo zwei muslimische Emire frei, die ihm zum Dank den Ehrennamen "El Cid" - der Herr - geben. Vom kastilischen Adel jedoch wird er dieser Tat wegen des Hochverrats beschuldigt. Es kommt zu einem Duell, bei dem er den königlichen Schwertführer Graf Gormaz tötet. Damit zieht Rodrigo sich den unbändigen Hass von dessen Tochter Jimena zu - die er eigentlich zur Frau nehmen sollte. In ihrem Rachedurst versucht diese gemeinsam mit dem intriganten Grafen Ordóñez, ihn töten zu lassen. Obwohl Cid um Jimenas tiefe Abneigung weiß, will er sie noch immer heiraten.
Zwar bekommt er nach einer heroisch geschlagenen Schlacht den Segen des Königs Ferdinand, aber bevor die Ehe vollzogen werden kann, flüchtet die unwillige Braut in ein Kloster. Wenig später stirbt der König. Sein ältester Sohn Sancho besteigt den Thron, kommt aber bei einem Attentat ums Leben. El Cid verdächtigt den jüngeren, machtgierigen Prinzen Alfonso öffentlich des Mordes an seinem Bruder. Dieser schwört seine Unschuld und schickt den Edelmann für die beleidigende Anschuldigung in die Verbannung. Unter Cids treu ergebenen Gefolgsleuten befindet sich auch Jimena, deren Liebe mittlerweile neu entflammt ist. Zur gleichen Zeit bereitet der gefürchtete Berberführer Yussuf eine Invasion in Kastilien vor. Angesichts dieser Bedrohung hat Alfonso keine Wahl: Er muss El Cid um Hilfe bitten. Im belagerten Valencia kommt es zur entscheidenden Schlacht, die den Nationalhelden endgültig unsterblich macht. (ARD)
