A social drama from contemporary rural life. Die ruhige Atmosphäre von Hájíčeks Texten wurde hier gut eingestimmt, die Kamera wirkt geschmackvoll und funktionstüchtig, die Musik wird hier relativ gut und nicht suggestiv verwendet. Leider ist hier Marek Adamczyks schauspielerische Darbietung sehr flach (obwohl er vielerlei Grimassen verwendet) und die hoffnungsvolle drehbuchtechnische Einleitung klingt vollends im Dunkeln und verwirrt aus. Dies ist weder ein besonders spannender Thriller noch ein besonders aufwändiges Beziehungsdrama. Er fällt in die Rubrik "solide und ohne markante Elemente".

Eine schwache Transkription von Hájíčeks Buch "Green Horse Rustlers" (2001). Während Hájíček in der Welt der Literatur ein Bestseller ist, hat er in der Welt des Films noch keinen Erfolg gehabt. Die Idee ist natürlich nicht schlecht, aber selbst das dreiköpfige Drehbuchautorenteam konnte die geradlinige, in Ich-Form erzählte Geschichte nicht in einen kohärenten Spielfilm umsetzen. Sogar vom formalen Standpunkt aus gesehen ist das etwas seltsam, da es den Außenaufnahmen oft an Details mangelt und sogar wichtige Dialoge in unübersichtlichen Einheiten gezeigt werden. Schauspielerisch sind vielleicht Liška und Boková die Antwort, Adamczyk, Míčová und Vaculíková werden nicht besonders geführt und spielen alle etwas anders, je nach ihrer bisherigen Erfahrung. Eine verpasste Gelegenheit. Der Versuch, einen tschechischen Western zu schaffen, ist ausgesprochen verkrampft.

Ein klassischer Kampf zwischen Buch und Film. Das Buch ist zwar dünn, aber ich erinnere mich, dass ich es gerne gelesen habe, auch wenn die Handlung nur langsam dahinfloss. Das Thema ist sicherlich nicht abgedroschen, aber es wird nicht Millionen von Menschen ansprechen. Der Film ist meiner Meinung nach unpassend besetzt, und das ist ihm insgesamt gesehen abträglich. Weder Pavel Liška noch Boleslav Polívka sind für ihre Rollen geeignet, während Jenovéfa Boková traditionell das abliefert, was man von ihr erwartet. Alles in allem: drei Sterne, weder besser noch schlechter. Ich bin nicht überrascht, dass der Film nur unauffällig durch die Kinos und die Mainstream-Wahrnehmung hindurchfloss.

I'm actually quite satisfied with this film. Pavel Liška portrayed his character brilliantly, which I didn't really believe at first, but he showed that he really is the great actor that many people think he is. And I believe it too. The moldavites have their malignant charm in the film, as do some of the characters and their fates, which are not simple.

I am sad that screening of a film like Green Horse Rustlers was so limited in the Czech cinemas. Not only in number of cinemas that it showed, but also in the number of screenings. It’s a pity. The theme is interesting and the acting performances of Pavel Liška and Jenovéfa Boková are truly phenomenal. The problem is that the whole thing is just too ordinary and basically from everyday life. The film lacks any stronger plot line and it ends the same way it begins. The ending is more realistic than film-like, which certainly doesn’t hurt. Only it made it into a small Czech film revolving around moldavites instead of a great Czech drama.
