Greyhound – Schlacht im Atlantik

Ein schneller Kriegsfilm von einem Schiff im Atlantik. Der Plot würde für eine mittellange Erzählung reichen. Das Werk wird von Hanks’ Persönlichkeit gerettet. Die Figuren werden praktisch überhaupt nicht näher beschrieben, der Krieg und die Kriegsmanöver sind ziemlich unübersichtlich. Trotzdem ist der Film spannend und die Zuschauer*innen bekommen eine Vorstellung davon, wie es war, in dieser Hölle zu landen – ohne Schlaf, ohne Nahrung und mit der Notwendigkeit von schnellen, intuitiven Entscheidungen. Nur darüber handelt Greyhound – Schlacht im Atlantik. Pathos ist da, aber nur dezent. Fürs Kino wären die Länge und der Inhalt unzureichend, als VoD ist es aber ideal. (29.07.2020)

Ein wunderschönes naives Kriegsepos der alten Schule über einen Soldaten Christi, welcher den Krauts in Pantoffeln trotzt. Eine super Idee, eine prozedurale Perspektive einzunehmen und die Jagd nach den U-Booten von der anderen Wasserobeflächenseite zu betrachten. Wenn Hanks doch auf das völlig unnötige persönliche und religiös gestimmte Gedöns verzichtet hätte und es bei einem 91-minütigen Zick-Zack-Ausweichmanöver zwischen U-Booten beließe, hätte es ausgesprochen packend werden können. Auf diese Art und Weise wirkt es packend/bringt uns zum Schmunzeln, allerdings möchte ich in keinster Weise vertuschen, dass dieser Film klare Argumente für dessen Länge vorbringt. Einfach der perfekte Film für Opa Simpson. Und auch für diejenigen, die abgefahren sind auf U-571 oder auf U-Boot-Filme im Allgemeinen. (12.07.2020)

Tom Hanks and his ship escort an Allied convoy across the Atlantic, but lurking beneath the surface are German U-boats. How many supply ships will eventually reach their destination? Hanks delivers honest man's film that has no room for talk, but no room for any substantial character psychology either. It's full on from more or less the beginning, with ships and submarines chasing each other for over an hour straight, shooting or torpedoing all the time, and even though the visual effects aren't particularly good and it might not have been a bad idea to slow down a bit sometimes and deal with things other than combat, it's a very fine watch. Tom Hanks in another war movie, and is great again, and the short running time makes it a fairly brisk suspenseful one-off, but the combat at sea is not as appealing to me as combat on land, so I saw the film more out of obligation and curiosity. Story****, Action***, Humor>No, Violence>No, Entertainment***, Music***, Visuals****, Atmosphere***, Suspense****. 6/10. (19.07.2020)

As if, after Band of Brothers and Pacific, Tom Hanks needed to pay homage once more to the front-line heroes of World War Two. This film falls short of the parameters of a war movie for the big screen; it rather feels like an expensive TV production, with one studio, one incomplete model of the ship, a bit of wizardry with the weather, and lots and lots of greenscreen. At times it is monotonous with one order after another being barked at subordinates, but it also contains interesting ideas (to wit: the provocative radio calls of German U-boats). Hanks, who has the proper charisma of a captain, reliably keeps the picture afloat, and the torpedoes provide one moment of suspense – but overall, I’m not impressed. Das Boot isn’t dethroned by this.
