Stevie ist 13 und wächst unter schwierigen Verhältnissen in Los Angeles auf. Seine Tage verbringt er mit „Street Fighter II“ zocken und heimlich die CD-Sammlung seines großen Bruders rauf und runter hören. Als er anfängt, mit den Jungs vom Local Skateshop abzuhängen, öffnet sich ihm eine völlig neue Welt: Skaten an verbotenen Plätzen, Abhauen vor der Polizei, Hauspartys und natürlich Girls. Befreit aus der Umklammerung seiner alleinerziehenden Mutter und den Prügeln seines Bruders, fühlt sich Stevie unbesiegbar – bis er merkt, dass auch seine Idole auf die Schnauze fliegen können. I won't pretend that my childhood in a similar era looked anything like this, because it was much more balanced, peaceful, and appropriately introverted. Nevertheless, I really like how Jonah Hill captures the time. Not as a nice decade of formative childhood, but as a problematic, lost, and therefore somewhat nostalgic moment in cultural development, to some extent even a dead end. This opposite direction can only be appreciated because it has exactly that burning imperfection and incompleteness and thus captures why the 90s will continue to fascinate me even on my deathbed.

Ein fantastisch positiver, entspannter Film. Ich habe schon lange keinen solchen Film gesehen. Ich hoffe, dass Jonah Hill bald wieder etwas drehen wird. Mid90s ist keine Nostalgie, die sich nach der Vergangenheit sehnt. Es ist eine unterhaltsame Rückkehr in eine Zeit, die wahrscheinlich nicht besonders unterhaltsam war. Dies war aber den Protagonisten der Geschichte nicht bewusst. Neben dem ausgezeichneten Drehbuch (wieder Jonah Hill, halten Sie mich fest) muss ich auch die ausgezeichnete Auswahl der Musik loben. Dank der Gesamtform sieht der Film wirklich wie eine authentische Aufzeichnung aus, die vor 30 Jahren entstanden ist.

A formal bow to an era where adolescence still was defined by teenage parties, skateboards and music culture, and when the authentic, though today hardly watchable video format was the rule. A story with a shabby concept and predictable twists, but made with humour and with the heart of a boy that in that era wandered the streets with a video camera and dreamt about a future where he would no longer have to crouch under the weight of a depressive environment of poverty. Perfect casting, awesome soundtrack and Fuckshit – with deserved (not only) underground cult status.

Proof of the universality of growing up. Will work just as well at home alone as it does in a full theater. Except different. Consistently divorced from today's cinematic reality, see the language used or the reduction and purpose of the female characters. A perfect illusion, not just a trendy 90s nostalgia trip as the first minutes of the film littered with period artifacts suggest. In a Czech setting, the film will have the benefit of the wider sweep of Larry Clark and Harmony Korine's work that was here at the start of the millennium.
