Der zehnjährige Lewis (Owen Vaccaro) findet nach dem schrecklichen Verlust seiner Eltern bei seinem schrulligen Onkel Jonathan (Jack Black) im verschlafenen Städtchen New Zebeedee ein neues Zuhause. Umsorgt werden sie von der nicht minder seltsamen Nachbarin Mrs. Zimmermann (zweifache Oscar®-Preisträgerin Cate Blanchett). Doch nicht alles ist ruhig in Lewis’ neuem Leben. Tief in den Gemäuern von Jonathans knarzigem altem Haus tickt unaufhörlich eine mysteriöse Uhr, die sich trotz aller Anstrengungen nicht aufspüren lässt. Ungewollt überschlagen sich die Ereignisse. Als Lewis entschlossen versucht, das sonderbare Mysterium zu lösen und dem Ticken ein Ende zu bereiten, erweckt er versehentlich den Geist einer mächtigen Hexe, die durch die korrekte Justierung der magischen Uhr das Ende der Welt heraufbeschwören will.
