Molly ist mit ihrem Freund Nick in der Wüste von Nevada unterwegs, als ihr Wagen irgendwo im Nirgendwo stecken bleibt. Ungünstiger könnte der Moment nicht sein, denn sie befinden sich mitten in einer Apokalypse und ein Zombie nähert sich, der es auf Nicks Innereien abgesehen hat. Der entsetzten Molly bleibt nichts anderes übrig, als mit ihren hochhackigen Tretern quer durch die Wüste zu fliehen - stets mit ihrem hartnäckigen neuen Verehrer im Schlepptau. Bis an die Zähne bewaffnet mit Wodka, Kokain, Kippen und Tampons versucht sich die junge Frau in Richtung Zivilisation durchzuschlagen. Doch zwischen Hitze und dunklen Nächten wird ihr klar, dass eine wandelnde Leiche noch das Geringste ihrer Probleme ist. (EuroVideo Media)

The American zombie horror film It Stains the Sands Red is an example that this genre can still be approached a little differently and given a slightly different perspective. What I like about the film, besides the fact that there's always something going on and surprisingly it's not boring, is that it goes from basically a comedy to a pretty gritty drama. And it works, as neither aspect interferes with the other and they fit together nicely. You simply have to get used to the main character and the specific logic of the film.

I am fascinated by the things film creators are able to come up with. A rather unsightly junkie who is driving a nearly new Porsche with a black guy on a deserted highway very quickly gets into a pile of shit. The boyfriend gets whacked by the one (sic!) zombie, who then chases her across the entire tundra. She then tries to lure the zombie using a tampon soaked in blood and she thinks this will save her skin. I guess I don’t have to add what happens after that. Several more disgusting things happen. Nevertheless, I do agree and understand why this movie raised a slightly positive uproar at some genre-specific festivals. The premise isn’t too bad and somebody who likes a similar style might feel good about it. It’s really interesting to see what some screenwriters have in their heads.
