Die Frauen von Stepford

I haven't read the book or seen the original 70s film version until now. Therefore, I don't have to deal with the eternal problem of how shamefully and directly the screenwriter and director dealt with sacred models. Departing from the original genre and making a sci-fi comedy seems like a very reasonable idea, a similar concept can't be taken seriously anymore. I openly admit that I enjoyed it more than most current comedies, but that doesn't necessarily mean that they are full of original, sparkling humor. It rather reflects my positive attitude towards sci-fi and what is liked, is also easily criticized. Oz's direction is fine within his possibilities, weaknesses are more evident in the script. The cast is decent and Nicol Kidman's performance is a perfect hit. Overall impression 55%. (12.05.2007)

The atmosphere is lackluster, the technical execution is very inconsistent, and the film as a whole simply feels weird. The problem is that it presents the topic with such a dose of stupidity and directorial incompetence, and the actors overact in such a crazy way that it's horrifying. (20.03.2005)

Der schwächste Film von Frank Oz, den ich bisher gesehen habe. Es hat mich verwundert, dass er sich überhaupt nicht um das Aufbauen einer geheimnisvollen Stimmung bemüht und dass er eigentlich alles, was sich andere für das Ende aufheben würden, schon von Anfang an verrät. Das Ende war völlig dumm. Trotzdem habe ich den Eindruck, dass es kein schlechter Film ist. Es ist einfach nur eine durchschnittliche schwarze Komödie, die mehr Potenzial hatte. (10.02.2019)

This was such a shitty movie that did not impress me at all. Maybe there was just a slightly above average Nicole Kidman, however, that is really, really not enough to be awarding the movie more than one star. (12.02.2009)
