Muriel Heslop ist übergewichtig, unattraktiv und ihr fehlt jegliches Selbstbewusstsein. Aus dem Alltag flüchtet sie sich in eine Fantasiewelt voller ABBA-Songs und wartet auf ihren Traumprinzen, der sie aus dem Kleinstadtmief von Porpoise Spit wegbringen und von ihrem unsensiblen Vater und den zickigen Altersgenossinnen befreien soll. Doch da der edle Retter auf sich warten lässt, beschließt Muriel eines Tages, ihr Glück selbst in die Hand zu nehmen, und macht sich, mitsamt der Familienkasse, auf den Weg nach Sydney. Dort angekommen, freundet sie sich mit Rhonda an, die vor Jahren das australische Kaff, aus dem auch Muriel kommt, hinter sich gelassen hat. Gemeinsam treten sie als ABBA-Revival-Band für die Gäste eines Ferienclubs auf, unter ihnen auch die gleichaltrigen Mädchen aus Porpoise Spit. Und als das Glück Muriel endlich lacht, winkt sogar die Hochzeit, von der sie immer geträumt hatte. (KinoweltTV)

Comedically tuned drama about the adolescence and maturation of a rural girl who was seeking happiness in the city. A very positive-sounding film that reminds me of Mamma Mia! and one that I still enjoy returning to. Although ABBA's music appears in a number of films, in this case, the combination of this easygoing music and the film's story is probably the most successful. Overall impression: 90%. It was in this film that I discovered the excellent actress Toni Collette, who soon broke into Hollywood thanks to it.

Such a very pleasant Australian romantic comedy that has proper thorns. It's like you want to laugh the whole time, but the movie gives you plenty of reasons to cry instead. Beautifully balanced drama with comedy, which actually isn't romantic at all, at least not in the American sense of the word. That's exactly what makes the film beautifully unique. Of course, thanks to Toni Collette. And with ABBA!
