Die Insel der besonderen Kinder

Tim Burton decided to handle another horror fairy tale, the story of which really fits with his style. And you can really see how much he was enjoying himself making this movie. For instance, the final scene in the theme park is probably the craziest scene that Tim Burton ever created in image and sound. On the other hand, I had a bit of a problem with the way they explained the world. To be honest, I was getting lost in all those pasts and presents and even several days after I watched the film, I couldn’t really process how exactly Eva Green manipulated time. On the other hand, I got exactly what I wanted. Tim Burton had a blast once again with the story and all of that and I had the opportunity to enjoy all that with the works. The beginning of the movie in America is exactly like from the world of Edward Scissorhands; actually, that film will be alluded to several times. Old England is exactly the way you would imagine it would be in a movie by Tim. Difficult, mysterious, terrifying. All in one. What else can I say? In this respect, I was really satisfied. What I don’t understand however are the opinions of people who seem to be specialist assistants to that clown of a spokesperson of the Czech president who feel that Tim’s recent movies have been stale. I definitely disagree with that. The contrary. When he’s making movies in his name and not in the name of large studios, it’s still a pleasure to watch his flicks. (17.10.2016)

Es fällt mir schwer, den Film so zu bewerten, wie ich ihn bewerte, weil die Musik von Danny Elfman das allerletzte ist, was dem neuen Film von Tim Burton fehlt. Er sieht schön aus, über Eva Green habe ich mich sehr gefreut (endlich spielt sie etwas ein bisschen anderes) und die Kinder sind angenehm seltsam. Dennoch ist der Film unglaublich langweilig. Das Ende ist chaotisch und nur deshalb actionmäßig, damit man nicht behaupten kann, dass es im Film keine Action gibt, und damit die Trickmacher ihren Lebensunterhalt verdienen… Das Buch habe ich nicht gelesen. Ich möchte es aber nach wie vor machen – momentan deshalb, weil ich glaube, dass es besser sein wird. (14.11.2016)

The premise is interesting, but this time Burton didn't figure out very well what age group he wanted the final product to appeal to. There are some shots that twelve-year-olds would struggle to breathe through, but most of the narrative feels like a more civil version of the overwrought Alice. The first two acts cannot be denied a magical atmosphere and loving craftsmanship, but the ending falls into a generic and stale sterile phase, where everything is readable in advance and therefore uninteresting in relation to the fate of the characters. Eva Green gets a punishingly short leash, and Jackson as the villain is a lot of fun (which is also the result of an unnecessary attempt at modern insight). The biggest impression, apart from the traditionally beautiful visuals, will be left by the eye-catching Ella Purnell, this girl is definitely worth watching in the future... 65% (29.01.2017)

Da ich das Buch nicht gelesen habe, kann ich nicht beurteilen, inwieweit sich die Macher an die Vorlage gehalten oder wie sehr sie sie "vergewaltigt" haben - ich bin also völlig unbeleckt an Die Insel der besonderen Kinder gegangen. Zunächst einmal muss ich sagen, dass ich persönlich Burtons frühere Filme bevorzuge, die vor einprägsamen Bildern und einer guten Portion schwarzen Humors nur so strotzen - Sleepy Hollow und Edward mit den Scherenhänden sind Beispiele dafür. Das soll nicht heißen, dass Die Insel der besonderen Kinder ein schlechter Film ist - im Gegensatz zu anderen Nutzern hat mich die fiktive Welt, die in dem Film dargestellt wird, überhaupt nicht gestört (z. B. war ich von den Ymbryn-Figuren und ihrer Fähigkeit, die Zeit zu kontrollieren, fasziniert). Was die Besetzung betrifft, so war sie größtenteils sympathisch, obwohl den meisten Figuren wenig Raum gegeben wurde und sie durch ihre "Seltsamkeit" eher bescheiden eingeführt wurden. Am meisten hat mich Samuel L. Jackson amüsiert, der zum gedämpften, aber dennoch schwarzen Humor des Films beitrug. Außerdem gefiel mir die Besetzung mit Eva Green und Judi Dench (die nur kurz im Film zu sehen war). Ich muss die Tatsache würdigen, dass Stop-Motion-Animation, die in heutigen Filmen nicht mehr so häufig vorkommt, in dem Film verwendet wurde - sie hätte auch an anderen Stellen verwendet werden können, um den Film mehr nach Retro aussehen zu lassen. Das Auftauchen der Monster, die, wie bereits jemand bemerkte, wie Slender Man aussahen, war richtig gruselig und ihr Kampf mit den Skeletten war wirklich gut. Kurz gesagt, es ist kein reiner Vier-Sterne-Film, aber im Vergleich zu Burtons Dark Shadows oder Planet der Affen, denen ich drei Sterne gegeben habe, hat mir Die Insel der besonderen Kinder trotzdem besser gefallen. Die ideale Vorlage für einen Regisseur vom Typ Tim Burton. Genau für ihn ist diese Mystery-Fantasy wie geschaffen. Und wenn er sich Eva Green, Samuel L. Jackson und Terence Stamp für sein Schauspielensemble aussucht, muss der Erfolg garantiert sein. Zwei Stunden gute Unterhaltung mit einem anständigen Finale. Vielleicht halte ich es nicht aus und lese den zweiten Teil in Buchform. (08.01.2017)

It's such a grim symptom of the times when a once idiosyncratic author adapts a book about the beauty of being different and distinctive storytelling and comes out with a completely pure, first-rate, contemporary blockbuster with all its diagnoses. Once again it has an implausible cast of characters that dilute any interest, once again we go two-thirds of the way through the film before picking up some kind of plot, once again the whole thing feels like a walk through a freakshow where we pause for a moment at each specimen only to continue unmoved to the next. The best moments here are pulled out of the sleeve of the subject matter (though it's again Harry Potter like crazy) with some cute ideas, the film itself on the other hand lacks any kind of handwriting altogether. The main problem is that the whole imaginary world doesn't work on its own, but only for the viewer. There is no second layer, each aspect of the alternate reality must be given its own few shots and duly commented on, presumably so that they can be used in the final climax. This, however, suffers from a Marvel-esque overstuffing, where basically thirty people are doing stuff, leaving the viewer in the role of the spoiled child of divorced parents, showered with so many toys that he has lost all inclination to play with them. The only thing that ultimately clashes with the whole concept are the gruesome horror scenes of slendermen devouring children's eyes, which admittedly feel a little out of place in all the superficial exuberance, but anything that feels out of place in these calculated films is simply welcome by default. If I hadn't read the book, I probably would not be so critical, but this way I have to say that I was severely underwhelmed. I didn't understand why the screenwriter switched Olive and Emma's abilities, why no one realized that a torpedoed ship usually has a hole in the side through which water usually leaks in, and I certainly don't understand why a decent mystery horror film had to be rehashed into a mediocre comedy/mystery. Tim Burton has really grown stale to me in recent years. Yes, in this film, there are a few horror moments that made me rejoice, but it's just an echo of Burton's poetics. The characters in this film are completely underused, especially Eva Green, who is basically useless here. The others also have little space and their significance is relatively fleeting.
