From Beyond - Aliens des Grauens

Average. Jeffrey Combs delivers a very good performance, but I liked him more as Herbert West. I don’t care much about the scripts of these B-movies, but the constant repetition of the experiments (it didn’t work, let’s try again and if something goes wrong, we’ll try at least once more…) was tiring already in Re-Animator. What I liked the most were the last 15 minutes – sucking a brain through an eye socket was great. I also liked the make-up effects, but the special effects weren’t that good. (06.06.2008)

Die Macher des berühmten Re-Animator trafen sich ein Jahr später erneut, um einen weiteren ausgezeichneten Horrorfilm genau in ihrem schmuddeligen Stil zu drehen. Sie sparen diesmal etwas Blut, aber das wird reichlich durch die Vielzahl kurioser Monster ausgeglichen, die vor den Augen der Zuschauer ständig ihre Form ändern und so mit kreativem Maskenbild überraschen. Das Drehbuch kommt mit nur wenigen Charakteren aus, das Bild ist voller lebhafter Farben und dank der wunderbaren Musik von Band gelingt es, eine spannungsgeladene Atmosphäre mit leicht erotischer Ausstrahlung zu schaffen. Der Film wurde gerne an Freitagabenden auch vom Fernsehsender Nova ausgestrahlt. Das war allerdings zu einer Zeit, als sie noch für etwas stand. (12.10.2011)

When this film appeared on the screens in the early 90s, I would have given it 3 stars because this kind of garbage horror production was something new for us and it seemed interesting in its bizarre way. Fortunately, I have seen many other things already, so I can establish a benchmark and I can send From Beyond exactly where it belongs. If anyone claims that scripts don't matter in B-movies, for me the quality of the script represents the basis for evaluating films, and that is precisely the problem here. B-movie means a lower budget, but it should not mean crystal-clear stupidity in character behavior, dumb dialogues, and motivations. I give it one star for the wonderfully decadent erotic scene when the lady doctor turns into a stripper. Overall impression: 25%. (05.01.2013)

Recently, I watched Re-Animator, so I decided to rewatch this classic I hadn't seen in years, which was made by practically the same group of filmmakers. Surprisingly, I found myself enjoying the film even more this time around. While the inspiration from the short story was evident, the plot took on a life of its own, which didn't bother me at all — I still had a blast. Granted, the humor was toned down (it was left up to Bubba), but the creators aimed to ramp up the tension and horror, which, judging by my reaction, paid off. Sure, the film's age was noticeable, but I was all the more impressed by most of the special effects. It had atmosphere, tension, and even scantily-dressed Barbara Crampton. While it may not have been groundbreaking, I was thoroughly entertained. Lesson Learned: Every experienced Path of Exile player knows that it's not wise to provoke a Beyond boss. 4*- (22.01.2024)
