Paris, 1947. Inspektor Borniche (Alain Delon) versucht, einen Großverbrecher – entgegen der üblichen Brutalität seiner Kollegen – mit psychologischem Geschick zu fangen. Der Gangster ist aus der Psychiatrie geflohen und dabei, in einem Versteck unterzutauchen. Ein Rennen gegen die Zeit beginnt. Paris, 1947. Roger Borniche ist ein Bekämpfer des Verbrechens. Nicht mit Brutalität, sondern mit Verstand löst er seine Fälle. So auch, als er den Auftrag bekommt, Gangster Emile Buisson zu verhaften, der aus der Psychiatrie entflohen ist. Seine Kollegen sind wenig angetan von Borniche und von seiner arroganten Art angewidert. Doch er lässt sich nicht davon abbringen, mit Beobachtung und Recherche langsam dem Gangster auf die Schliche zu kommen. Eine Mammutaufgabe, da Buisson ein überaus intelligenter und unberechenbarer Krimineller ist. Roger Borniche ist ihm immer wieder dicht auf der Spur, doch er entweicht ihm wieder und wieder. (arte)

As much as I love Delon, here he was not the best choice. This is a role for someone from the Ventura or Gabin class, and not for such a “dandy". Alain would be more suited to the role of the tough guy cop. Still, he's good, just not as good as he could have been and should have been. And this is actually the only complaint, because otherwise Flic Story is a classic 70s French crime story with all the strengths that implies. And there are plenty of them -- no doubt about it.

It looks absolutely great at first. Alain Delon is just classically good as a proper cop, but Jean-Louis Trintignant is absolutely brilliant as the thug. Unfortunately, as the film builds up, the escalation sort of fades away, and the finale left me rather disappointed, and those feelings lingered mostly. That’s too bad.

An exemplary French filmmaking, which is also dominated by the good old Czech dubbing. Without it I don’t think it would be worth the five stars, but the dubbing makes Alain Delon and Jean-Louis Trintignant seem so perfect that the film gives you goosebumps throughout the whole story, which is essential for a proper French crime drama.
