Skandinavien im Jahr 796: Ragnars Bruder Rollo hat sich von ihm abgewandt und steht ihm nun an der Seite von Jarl Borg gegenüber. Ragnar versucht ein letztes Mal, die Angelegenheit im Guten beizulegen, doch Rollo will nicht verhandeln und löst damit eine gnadenlose Schlacht mit seinem Bruder und dessen Gefolge aus. Zurück im Dorf konfrontiert Lagertha ihren Mann Ragnar mit Fragen nach Prinzessin Aslaug. Beide ahnen nicht, dass sie auf dem Weg nach Kattegat ist. (ProSieben)

An emotional whirlwind at the end of the first episode. Big dilemmas and family disruption in a way we are not used to, for example, in the similarly tuned GoT. So sensation accomplished, even without any vehement sword swinging.

Season two started off great with an armed clash and a rift between brothers. I was ready to give the episode five stars. But then, the show slipped into melodrama during the monologue to the dead daughter, and the annoying family scene was the final straw. Despite these gripes, I couldn’t bring myself to give it a lower rating.
