Von Regisseur Clint Eastwood kommt die Leinwand-Version des mit dem amerikanischen Theaterpreis Tony ausgezeichneten Musicals „Jersey Boys". Der Film erzählt die Geschichte von vier jungen Männern aus einem Armeleuteviertel in New Jersey, die sich zusammentun und bekannt werden als die Sixties-Kult-Popgruppe "The Four Seasons". Die Geschichte ihrer Erfahrungen und Erfolge wird begleitet von den Songs, die eine ganze Generation beeinflusst haben, wie „Sherry", „Big Girls Don't Cry", „Walk Like a Man", „Dawn", „Rag Doll", „Bye Bye Baby", „Who Loves You" und viele mehr. Eine ausgezeichnete Biografie einer tollen Band, die Clint Eastwood als… einen Gangsterfilm gedreht hat? Ja, genau so. Tolle Schauspielleistungen, die typisch präzise Regie "eines teilnahmslosen Beobachters“ mit einigen sensationellen Ideen (das Vorbeifahren an den Fenstern des Musikverlags), eine glaubhafte Retro-Stimmung mit ein wenig verblassten Farben und dann Musik, Musik und nochmal Musik. Bei der Szene im Nachspann hat es mir fast leidgetan, dass der ganze Film kein Musical war, weil die behaglichen fünf Minuten mit Tanz natürlicher und beeindruckender als z. B. das ganze La La Land waren.

Was kann man von der Filmadaption eines Jukebox-Musicals erwarten? Besser nichts. Der Soundtrack ist natürlich gut, aber das sind einfach die süßen Jungs von The Four Seasons.

A film which puts together a lot of interesting things. Clint Eastwood probably filmed something really personal which influenced him a lot in the past, because otherwise I cannot explain the reason for this small-scale film about, for us, a small band. It was nice that he found some fresh faces for this movie. I also liked how well he showed the American late fifties and early sixties full of laughter, which brought us the famous American smile. All that glitters is not gold, however, and in this case the glitter conceals a pile of dirt that Clint dug into a bit. The references to old movies are nice and Christopher Walken with his visage fitted in nicely. However, this movie’s meanings are lost on us Czechs. At least I think so.

Clint Eastwood, as a classic and skilled director, successfully handled the biographical film based on the musical of the same name. The film is enjoyable to watch, but on the other hand, there is not a significantly added value. It is simply good, but within the realm of biographical films, it is just a standard that does not offend. However, the musical performances are good, and I finally know who composed and sang these songs.
