Englisch Mamoru Hosoda's handwriting can be recognized after just a few minutes. He successfully showcased sincere romance in The Girl Who Leapt Through Time while strongly emphasizing family values in Summer Wars. This time, he leaned more into both aspects – and yet I was caught unawares. Wolf Children goes even further, and from the very beginning, it is evident that this was a very personal story for its creator. Every twist stops the heart, and the weight of the narrative becomes increasingly unsettling over time. I can't even blame Ameme and Yuki for the path they took, but I simply expected something more carefree and adventurous. This psychologically rich ode to nature is visually and narratively flawless, but at times, it is emotionally tormenting for me. ()
