Zwei nicht allzu hellen Gangstern gelingt es, ein illegales Pokerspiel zu überfallen, die Spieler um ihr Geld zu erleichtern und unerkannt zu entkommen. Das hat Folgen: Denn die Kartenspiele werden vom organisierten Verbrechen ausgerichtet, das eigentlich für die Sicherheit der Zocker geradestehen sollte. Solange die Diebe nicht geschnappt sind, müssen die Spiele ausgesetzt werden. Um schnell wieder Normalität einkehren zu lassen, wird Jackie Cogan engagiert, ein Profikiller, der Beste seines Fachs. Ihm wird es aber nicht leicht gemacht. Die Bürokratie und Unentschlossenheit des Syndikats rauben ihm den letzten Nerv, ein einst todsicherer Kollege entpuppt sich als unzuverlässiger Säufer, und Cogans Angewohnheit, seine Ziele nur "weich" zu töten, also aus sicherer Entfernung, ohne ihnen in die Augen blicken zu müssen, ist ein zusätzliches Hindernis bei der Durchführung seines Jobs. Ein sich um große Originalität bemühender Gangsterfilm mir einer Starbesetzung. Die Figuren (außer Brad) sind aber Schussel, die weder Respekt erwecken noch witzig cool sind. Die Dialoge sind nicht unterhaltsam und es fehlt ihnen eine Pointe (bis auf Brads letzten Spruch). Das Interessanteste am Film ist die Ergänzung der Geschichte von einer nichtigen Bande von Kriminellen durch Repliken aus TV-Reden von George W. Busch oder Barack Obama, in denen sie behaupten, wie Amerika super ist und sein wird. Das Spielen mit der visuellen Seite und die verlangsamten Momente erwecken einen Anschein von Exklusivität. Es handelt sich aber um nichts Neues und ehrlich gesagt – zu Avengers passt es besser. Die auf einer Autotür befestigte Kamera, welche ihre Auf- und Zu-Bewegungen kopiert, gab es schon bei Tarantino (wer weiß, wo er das hergenommen hat). Spielerische Abzweigungen in der Handlung erfreuen die Zuschauer*innen, aber wenn man zurückblickt, wirken sie als Selbstzweck (Gandolfinis Figur und ihre Bedeutung in der Geschichte) und schließlich kommt es zu einer Lösung, die wir schon beim Blick aufs Filmplakat voraussetzen können.

A solid gangster movie. It’s not boring, but I can’t say it’s anything extraordinary. I didn’t get to know enough about any of the characters to really care for them, and it seems that a character that is introduced at the beginning doesn’t appear until the end just to kill someone. Given that in the end they stick a couple of minutes with some sort of message, my complaint could be disregarded by the fact that it’s clearly intentional. But come on! For me, nothing to write home about, no matter how I look at it. Points for the slow-motion shootout in the rain and the scene with the stoned dialogue. Otherwise, the most interesting thing about this film are the elegant posters.

It’s a bit boring, but you still get the bad boy Brad Pitt, who’ll get his head spinning trying to solve a pretty complicated case. Anyways, since the story isn’t that interesting, at least the setting is. It’s been a long time, if ever, since I saw a movie dealing with a financial crisis as urgently as this one does. But I guess it really works this way with thieves. I guess it was supposed to mean that since people don’t have much money in a crisis, people buy much less and the loot isn’t worth much, either. The score certainly wasn’t great here, which the thieves got to understand pretty quickly.

Modern-day realism in an old-school blazer. Dominik changes the rules of storytelling, while also balancing the human and political angles. Bush and Obama are depicted often as ridiculous figures thanks to their speeches about unity and faith in the stars and stripes in this game dominated by Pitt’s Cogan. The actors are perfect, the message short and sharp. Everything stands on the last few lines. America is not a country, it’s a business. Now fucking pay me.

Rebellious to the core, incredibly polished, skillfully directed, with a mature script. The story may be trivial, but the political subtext is harsh and uncompromising, just like the brawls and wide-open violence. After a long time, a gangster film with guts, which knows what it wants to say and literally screams it to the world.

Top, top, top! Ich weiß gar nicht, wann ich mir zum letztem Mal einen Film angeschaut habe, völlig begeistert gewesen bin und fast gleich nochmal auf Play gedrückt habe. Der Stil des Drehbuches ist einfach, es wird viel (aber nicht zu viel) geredet, die Stimmung ist knallhart, viele Szenen sehen fantastisch aus (die Tatsache, dass es sich meistens um ziemlich blutige Morde handelt, ändert daran diesmal nichts), Brad Pitt wirkt furchteinflößend, es gibt unberechenbare Figuren, die Musik ist interessant (Killing Them Softly hat keinen klassischen Soundtrack, man hört eigentlich nur Lieder aus dem Radio) und die Idee, anhand von Kriminellen die gegenwärtige Wirtschaftslage der USA zu zeigen, einfallsreich. Die Stimmung des Films hat mich eher an etwas von Jim Jarmusch als an die Filme der Coen-Brüder erinnert. Andrew Dominik hat wieder eine tolle Arbeit geleistet. Das, was ich vom fürchterlichen Film Drive nicht bekommen habe, hat mir Killing Them Softly in Hülle und Fülle gegeben.

When you see a movie with Brad Pitt in it, it's usually a blockbuster. But not every film is the same. Even though it's a collaboration between Brad Pitt and director Andrew Dominik. The movie "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford" is definitely worth remembering. But actually, the film "Killing Them Softly" is also a gem. Just don't expect it to be a big Hollywood film, it's more of a smaller-scale showcase of acting, which literally indulges in great bloody effects. Yes, there are few films where a shot to the head looks real, but lately more and more of these films have been appearing. "Killing Them Softly" is a film that handles this perfectly.
