How many times have we seen it? The story of a child abductor, of a serial killer, of he who lurks in the shadows, lying in wait. This documentary returns to the legend of Cropsey, a macabre story about a boogeyman that grownups in Staten Island invented so their little ones wouldn’t get themselves into trouble and would remain quietly at home. A fictional character that came to life when, in the early eighties, children really started to disappear. Yes, we’ve seen it many times, but it was never this real. (Sitges Film Festival)

Conflicting, going to extremes as if the authors had no idea where the search would take them. Which may be true, but in this case, the guys in editing room should put it together. But it is not the case. Especially the analogy that introduces it all, with the kind of spooky urban legend and the Blairwitch segment from the ruins, is clearly pointless and is at the expense of the space around the circumstances leading to the closure of that hospital. On the other hand, the material itself, the twists and turns, the prejudices, and the still unexplained course of the case, are so stimulating and disturbing that it will absorb you. That is for sure.
