Johan Westlund, kurz JW, stammt aus einfachen Verhältnissen, will aber hoch hinaus. Alle seine Freunde kamen mit silbernem Löffel im Mund zur Welt, JW muss sich sein Studium der Wirtschaftswissenschaften durch nächtliche Taxifahrten verdienen. Als er sich in die wohlhabende Sophie verliebt, will er schnell das ganz große Geld verdienen. So kommt es ihm gerade recht, als sein undurchsichtiger Chef Abdulkarim ihn bittet, den gerade aus dem Gefängnis ausgebrochenen Drogendealer Jorge mit dem Taxi einzusammeln. Gemeinsam mit ihm plant Abdulkarim den Kokainmarkt in Schweden aufzurollen. Genau das soll Mrado im Auftrag eines serbischen Kartells verhindern. Der hat gerade vom Jugendamt das Sorgerecht für seine Tochter übertragen bekommen, da deren drogenabhängige Mutter sich nicht mehr um die Achtjährige kümmern kann. Und da auch im organisierten Verbrechen Kind und Karriere nur schwer vereinbar sind, plant Mrado aus dem großen Deal von JW und Jorge das Startkapital für seine Zukunft zu schlagen. (arte)

This trilogy attracted me ever since I found out it existed. That’s why I made time for it and started watching the first instalment, which is also the one with the best rating both on this site and the IMDb. The story itself is not that bad, but the main character is so annoying that it’s not even pretty. A snobbish Norwegian wants a better life than he deserves and that’s why he gets what he actually deserves. The most beautiful thing about the whole story was that although the film is Swedish and everything takes place in Sweden, there are only a few Swedes in it. It is worth considering whether there are still Swedes in Sweden or whether the Swedes are rather Norwegians, Bulgarians, Serbians or Arabs, as in the case of this movie. Anyway, if not for the shitty camera and the arrogant main character, I would be satisfied. But without it, the movie would not be what it is. Distinctive. But for me, it is worth three stars.

While the rule of thumb in old mafia movies is "you can't trust anyone but your (mafia) family" here in ethnically embellished Sweden (nearly six languages are spoken in this movie), the complete opposite phrases come out. Quiet character building, some violence here and there, and quite a few action scenes under the baton of a very skilled director and cinematographer born to work with detail and light. The main character is mega unsympathetic, but kind of on purpose, and that's appreciated.
