Seit dem Unfalltod ihres kleinen Sohnes läuft das Leben von Becca und Howie Corbett zusehends aus dem Ruder. Hinter einer mühsam errichteten Fassade aus Normalität versuchen sie, ihren tiefen Schmerz zu verwinden. Auch die Ehe der beiden leidet immer stärker unter der Situation. Von einer Therapiegruppe für trauernde Eltern erhofft Howie sich Hilfe. Becca sucht derweil die Nähe ausgerechnet jenes Menschen, der für den Unfalltod ihres Sohnes verantwortlich war: eines angehenden Studenten und Comicautors, der seit dem Unglück von schweren Schuldgefühlen geplagt wird. Ein sehr gutes und vor allem sehr intensives Drama. Nichts für einfühlsame Zuschauer, denn für sie könnte es ihre ganze zerbrechliche Welt ins Wanken bringen. Fünf Superlative für Kidman und Eckhart wären unzureichend, aber es ist interessant, wie ideal Sandra Oh die beiden auf kleinstem Raum ergänzt. Am Ende dachte ich mir, dass es eigentlich ein sehr gutes Spiel ist, und es ist tatsächlich ein Spiel. Ich schätze, ich habe also doch etwas gelernt. Formal hatte es die gleiche Idee für ein Ende wie Frankie und Johnny.

Das Thema ist äußerst schmerzhaft, so dass niemand für niemanden einfach ist, einen Film mit diesem Thema anzusehen. Deshalb ist es entscheidend, wie sensibel der Regisseur das Thema aufgreift und welche Schauspieler mit den Hauptrollen besetzt werden. Ich war angenehm überrascht von John Cameron Mitchell - er hat einen weiten Weg von Shortbus bis Rabbit Hole zurückgelegt. Nicole Kidman hat ihre Oscar-Nominierung auf jeden Fall verdient, Aaron Eckhart ist ihr ein guter Sekundant. Ich kann mir das Ganze auch als Bühnenstück vorstellen, das wahrscheinlich die Grundlage für den Film ist.

The film has a simple premise - a couple must come to terms with the loss of their young son in an accident. The subject matter is so simple that this could only stand on one thing - the performances. And they were fully utilized. I'm not saying the topic is simple, but it's not explicitly developed; it's the acting performances that make the film good.

Rabbit Hole is an uncompromisingly serious psychological drama in which even a car’s trunk lid closes with insistent slowness. While Kidman explores the hole created by the loss of her child, Eckhart tries to fill it. She deals with the past; he looks to the future. There is no present in which they would find common ground. The film’s strange aloofness and the absence of everyday intimate moments between the central couple are explained by the devastating yet hopeful ending. They spent the entire ninety minutes seeking a path to the moment captured in the final shot. This is not in any respect a groundbreaking film and Kidman previously did a superb job of playing a woman dealing with a marital crisis in Eyes Wide Shut, but there is something quite rare in Rabbit Hole – a bit of truth. 80%

Even with a luxurious cast and an exceptionally serious topic, Rabbit Hole didn't leave any deeper traces in me. As a parent, I confirm that I don't know of a worse situation than losing a child, and as a movie viewer, I argue that I know plenty of films made more inventively and with better scripts. Overall impression: 60%.
