Dank der Erfindung japanischer Wissenschaftler haben sich die Vampire von blutrünstigen Monstern zu normalen Mitbürgern gewandelt. Mit synthtischem Blut verfügen sie über eine sozialverträglichere Alternative zur herkömmlichen Ernährungsweise. Aber obwohl die Menschen nun nicht mehr auf dem Speiseplan der Vampire stehen, gibt es weiterhin Vorbehalte gegen die fremden Wesen. Religionsführer und Regierungsbeamte in aller Welt spalten sich in zwei Lager, und auch in der Kleinstadt Bon Temps in Louisiana gibt es höchst unterschiedliche Haltungen.

Kellnerin Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin) weiß genau, wie man sich als Außenseiter fühlt, denn sie hat die Gabe", zu hören, was andere denken, und steht der gesellschaftlichen Integration der Vampire offen gegenüber - vor allem, wenn es um Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer) geht, einen attraktiven 173-Jährigen, der in der Nähe wohnt.
