In den Fünzigerjahren wird Leonard Chess, Sohn polnischer Einwanderer, als Plattenproduzent die treibende Kraft in der Musikszene Chicagos. Mit Bluesgitarrist Muddy Waters beginnt der Aufstieg seines Labels, dem bald auch Stars wie Little Walter, Big Willie Dixon und Howlin' Wolf angehören. Mit Chuck Berry bricht Chess die letzten Barrieren zum weißen Publikum, mit Sängerin Etta James entwickelt sich eine Beziehung, die über das Künstlerische hinausgeht.
