Gary schlägt sich mehr schlecht als recht durchs Leben. In einer Schaffenskrise stürzt er derart ab, dass er sturzbetrunken seine Wohnung in Brand steckt. Nun obdachlos geworden, zieht er mit seiner Publizistin Margaret in das Haus eines Kollegen ein. Allerdings verschlechtert sich sein Zustand dort so sehr, dass er plötzlich merkwürdige Geräusche hört und überall von einer Zahl verfolgt wird: der Neun! (Kabel eins classics)

A mysterious thriller/drama with brilliant performances and direction that captivated me with its original and sophisticated story. It makes you think about the events on screen both during the film and after it has finished because, even though the twist is easy to understand (if you’ve been paying attention), you won’t be able to put together all the details and make the small connections until later. It’s made for people who don’t mind thinking about a film and coming up with their own interpretation of its final outcome. Those who like soap operas, for instance, shouldn’t even try, it would only lower the rating.

A smart and well shot and written film with great actors. Definitely not for everyone, but worth checking out.

Hmm, das Nachdenken am Montagmorgen hat mir zum Glück nicht geschadet. Ich habe einen interessanten Film gesehen, der von Anfang an viele Andeutungen gemacht hat und immer verworrener wurde. Die letzten zehn Minuten waren echt heftig. Das Konzept der Autoren von The Nines - Dein Leben ist nur ein Spiel war gar nicht schlecht. Schade, dass mich die zweite Geschichte ein bisschen gelangweilt hat. Sie hätte entweder kürzer oder reichhaltiger sein sollen. Ansonsten habe ich eigentlich nichts zu bemängeln. Der Film hat gute Schauspieler*innen, die Musik ist schön. Die Regie ist eher schlicht und hat keine großen Effekte gebraucht. Ich fand sie aber trotzdem beeindruckend. Drei Sterne und noch ein kleines Stück dazu.

The whole movie has a quite interesting idea, which sometimes transforms into a rather Lynchian style, but as it turns out, this is not such an impenetrable film. On the contrary, even though Ryan Reynolds can be a rather repellent character, some people are bothered by him on principle, he once again proves to me that when he wants to and has a good director, he can play interestingly. This was also confirmed in the movie "Nines", which, for its interesting atmosphere, tension, and yet a certain human concept, caught my attention to some extent. It's not a great film, it's not a film that influenced my life, but I watched it with at least some enthusiasm.
