Marquise Thérèse de Gorla ist Tänzerin. Bei einer ihrer Auftritte in Lyon wird sie von Molière entdeckt. Plötzlich tanzt die Marquise vor dem König, der von ihr begeistert ist. Doch die furchtlose Thérèse will lieber schauspielern. Molière und sein Theaterensemble sind auf dem Weg zum König, als sie auf dem Marktplatz von Lyon zufällig die Marquise Thérèse de Gorla tanzen sehen. Sie sind begeistert von ihrem Talent und überreden sie, sich ihrer Theatertruppe anzuschließen. Der sehnlichste Traum der Marquise scheint somit in Erfüllung zu gehen. Doch bei ihrem ersten Auftritt verschlägt es ihr vor lauter Aufregung die Stimme. Von nun an soll sie daher nur noch tanzen. Doch Thérèse will Schauspielerin werden, sie ist das Tanzen leid. Sie erpresst Molière mit einer List: Nur dann werde sie für den König tanzen, wenn er ihr verspricht, dass sie bei seinem nächsten Stück eine Rolle bekommt. Als dann schließlich der König Molière vorschlägt, die Tragödie "Andromaque" des jungen Racine zu inszenieren, wird ihr langersehnter Traum Wirklichkeit. Racine, der inzwischen zu ihrem Liebhaber geworden ist, setzt gegen den Widerstand der anderen Ensemblemitglieder durch, dass die Marquise die Hauptrolle spielt. Und tatsächlich wird das Stück zu einem großen Erfolg, der König liebt es und die Marquise wird zum Star. Doch als sie krank wird, nimmt ihre Karriere ein tragisches Ende. (arte)

I needed to loosen up after a pretty rough French crime investigation film and as soon as I noticed Sophie Marceau’s boobs, I didn’t have to think twice about this movie. As I watched it, it reminded me a lot of Shakespeare in Love. Except for the difference that here, the lead is Sophie, who literally slept her way to the top. It was nice, nothing grand, but I couldn’t imagine a better movie before going to bed. Those corsets look amazing on her…

Sophie Marceau is undoubtedly a charming woman with an extraordinary amount of personal charm. She represents the type of actress who only needs to flash a fleeting smile or cheekily wink an eye and the audience is on her side. However, in the case of Marquise, that is far from enough. The story presents tiresome costume boredom, where the only value, besides the presence of Sophie and a few other famous names from French cinema in the 90s, is the generously conceived set starting with the costumes and ending with the spaces of the Versailles castle complex. The film failed due to its dramatic incapability, it doesn't work as a story, and its characters are also dysfunctional. That's strange, as the screenplay was a team effort, and yet it became the project's Achilles' heel. Overall impression: 35%.

Emotiv und real - ich habe den Film genossen. Eine angenehme Abwechslung, Sie werden sich bestimmt nicht langweilen. Außerdem ist der Film sehr fesselnd, vor allem in den Schlussszenen. Man hätte es noch besser machen können, vielleicht hätte ich noch etwas hinzufügen können, aber ich bin trotzdem sehr zufrieden und bewerte es hoch (auch dank der großartigen Sophie Marceau).
