The year is 44 B.C. Julius Caesar has been assassinated and civil war threatens to destroy the Republic. In the void left by Caesar’s demise, egos clash and numerous players jockey for position. The brutally ambitious Mark Antony attempts to solidify his power, aligning himself with Atia, but coming to blows with her son Octavian, who has been anointed in Caesar’s will as his only son and heir. The conspirator Brutus ponders how to curry favor with the masses that have condemned him as a murderer, while his mother Servilia concocts a deadly plot of her own. Meanwhile Titus Pullo attempts to pull his friend Lucius Vorenus out of the darkness that has engulfed his soul in the wake of personal tragedy. Nach dem 15. März beginnt dann das klassische Chaos. Die Zeit des Endes der Republik, das Werben von Marcus Antonius um Kleopatra, der Aufstieg von Octavian Augustus... Und natürlich mehrere Seitenstränge. Leider entschied sich HBO seinerzeit für die am meisten abgedroschene Geschichte, die schon zu Shakespeares Zeiten abgedroschen war. IMHO wird auch die Geschichte von Vorenos und Pullos Freundschaft daran nichts ändern. Außerdem war die Zeiteinteilung in der Serie sehr seltsam, die ersten Folgen traten auf der Stelle, das Ende war so beschleunigt, dass es unklar war. Und auch die Schlangenszene war nicht besonders toll.
