Shocking, outrageous, and poetic, Jigoku (Hell) is the most innovative creation from Nobuo Nakagawa, the father of the Japanese horror film. After a young theology student flees a hit-and-run accident, he is plagued by both his own guilt-ridden conscience and a mysterious, diabolical doppelganger. And in the gloriously gory final third of the film, Nakagawa offers up his vision of the underworld in a tour-de-force of torture and degradation. A striking departure from traditional Japanese ghost stories, Jigoku, with its truly eye-popping (and gouging) imagery, created aftershocks that are still reverberating in cinema around the world today. Diese erste Stunde ist langwierig und nicht gerade aufregend, aber wenn man sie als notwendigen Anstoß vor einem Sprung in den kochenden Kessel betrachtet, müsste man sich nicht komplett ins Gehirn bohren. In der schielenden Hölle lohnt es sich nämlich. Viel buntes Licht, Skelette, Schmerzen, Schreie. Vor allem die Schreie. Und ich wette meinen Finger darauf, dass es hier hauptsächlich wegen dieses Märtyrers ist. Hautabziehen, Körper zerlegen, Zähne herausreissen... Das lässt einem auch heute noch das Blut in den Adern gefrieren.
